About This Product

Motsenbocker's Lift Off 64 oz. Paint and Varnish Remover Lift Off breaks the molecular bond for fast and easy removal of spray paint, aerosol paint, semi-gloss, high-gloss, acrylic, enamel, and oil lacquer from vehicles, street signs, buildings, walls, floors, fiberglass, metal, tile, vinyl, plastic, brick, and concrete. Lift Off will not melt or dissolve paint, leaving paint solid and intact for safe and easy clean-up and disposal. No single remover can eliminate all stains because each stain has a unique chemical composition. Lift Off products are stain, rather than surface-specific, so they remove each type of stain including protein & sugar, grease & oil, and pigment & dye-based stains without damaging the surface. Lift Off stain removers can be used solo or combined into a powerful system to treat complex stains that cross categories, such as spaghetti and barbecue sauce, which are both protein and oil based. Use Paint & Varnish Remover for fast and easy removal of paint, varnish, wood stain, lacquer, polyurethane, epoxy, and shellac from cabinetry, flooring, furniture, wood, metal, stone, and masonry surfaces. An ideal substitute for methylene chloride and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) products.

Q:I have an older deck I am trying to remove paint from.

Answer This Question

A:  It should work, but I recommend letting it sit on the surface longer than the instructions, then reapply, let sit again for 5-10 minutes and start your scraping. Don't let it thoroughly dry if it's in the sun. If the surface of your deck is uneven from cracks, heavy wood grain, etc you might have problems getting the paint out of those areas. Maybe try a stiff brush with more of this product on those areas after you've removed the main layer(s) of paint.

A:  You may be able. I used it to bring our living room floor back to life because they had painted it like they were finishing a deck or porch. It took me a long time to finish. You put in an area you keep going over the area with the brush to make sure all the surfaces are getting soaked. After 15 remove it. However it needs Force and using a sharp tool. It might not be ideal for an old deck. We have used deck paints from home depot our deck is pretty old we pressure washed it and then cover it with a darker shade paint.

A:  Hi Brian, If your plan is to remove paint and what is below it (stain and varnish), this is the ideal product for the job. You can brush it on. Leave it set for upward of five-to-ten minutes; then you can use a high pressure water system to remove the paint and additional residue. Other tools that you can use include Scotch Brite pads and scrapers. It would be best to do this job when the sun isn't directly on the deck. The heat can dry out the formulation. If you have more questions, please call customer service (800-227-5538). They are glad to assist.

Q:Will this product remove Grout Renew?

        Answer This Question

A:  We used it to remove 2 layers of paint and on top of that a layer of varnish mixed with floor sealer. It's lots of work but got the job done. Keep brushing it over the spot for 10 minutes.

        by|Oct 7, 2020

A:  No, this product will not remove grout renew. An option is Motsenbocker's Caulk & Foam Sealant Remover, which is also available at The Home Depot.

              This product is absolutely worthless.
If your project involves anything more than perhaps simple polyurethane, this product is not going to help you. I have been refinishing for 37 years and this is the worst product I've ever used. Attempting to get the paint off of an old dresser and after 5 minutes nothing, after a half of an hour barely anything and after an hour, see picture. I can't imagine using this product on something with old varnish or shellac if it can't even get paint off. Incredible waste of my time and money.

Response from Stoner Customer SupportSep 9, 2022
Dear Angela, we value all of the comments from our customers as they relate to our products, even those that aren’t favorable.
In terms of Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Paint & Varnish Remover, it is a water-based formulation that reacts differently than solvent-based products that melt the paint or varnish and polyurethane. Lift Off breaks the bond between the paint and the surface.
Based on what you communicated about the age of the furniture, it is also possible that you are working with lead-based paint. Which as you know, is a formidable paint that adheres well to surfaces and is difficult to remove.
In this case, we recommend applying Lift Off in sections with a paint brush; then covering the area with Saran Wrap, which helps to hold in the moisture, and also helps the formulation to be more effective. We have recommended this to lots of furniture restorers who work with older furniture and paint. Please contact us at 800-227-5538 with other questions or additional feedback.

                Got the job done!
We had our floors done by amateurs. And when we brought professionals they told us we have to purchase new wood flooring because they have ruined our floor. with this product we got all the paint off the floor and thankfully we are able to refinish the old wood floor.

Multiple applications to remove exterior latex
It took 4-5 applications of Motsenbockers Liftoff Paint remover to remove exterior latex from aluminum. The third application was left overnight before it softened the paint enough to begin removing. I had to use an old Craftsman paint scraper (plastic putty knives wouldn't cut it) and a lot of elbow grease. It took a lot of pressure on the scraper resulting in some scratches in the aluminum. I'll be looking for something else to finish the job.

This worked best on a 1940 table. It removed old varnish in a short time and fumes were low and not toxic.

I have used this product before and used it this time for stripping Ikea chairs (heavy on the varnish!). Because Motsenbockers wasn't in my local store I started with a different name brand product with good reviews - well don't know what experience those other people have with stripping, cause that other product didn't do anything!! Switched over to Motsenbockers and all the varnish came off so easily, the way it's supposed to! Definitely recommend!!
