Q:Does this product need to be removed from boxes for 72 hours prior to installation? I dont think my contractors removed from boxes yet

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry, Lorraine. When working with wood or other moulding type products, such as this one, it is always recommended to bring the product inside your home to acclimatize for a goodweek prior to installation. This will ensure there is no expanding or contracting of the material. It doesn't necessarily have to be removed from the boxes to do this.

This is medium density fiberboard - if you are going to use it in a bathroom, which is a common place for wainscoting, you *must* prime it first. I primed each piece twice prior to installation and let it dry on a rack made of construction junk I had on hand. I hand nailed with 8d finish nails, counter-sunk all the nails with an appropriate sized punch, then filled the depressions with wood putty. I caulked with paintable silicon caulking to fill any gaps (you want to leave a little bit of space in between each board so it can flex as they expand and contract with heat) and to fill the edges where the trim meets the wall. I then painted two coats of waterproof white enamel paint with light sanding in between. I think this should last for a while. Ill be honest in the admission that this is an experiment. I'd have liked to have done the entire bathroom in hardwood but this MDF was considerably cheaper and I really think if you take your time it should be fine in a high humidity area. If you cut corners you will likely be upset in the future. We shall see if it works in the long run. Picture isn't the best but I am very happy with the result. Bathroom was a complete gut job that I did after work in the evenings.

This arrived in good shape. my contractor said it was easy to install. One box came with two chair rails instead of a baseboard.. A call to Home Depot and a baseboard arrived in a few days. Installed 3 weeks ago.

The fit and finish was great. The primer was very smooth and easy to paint. I would recommend painting both sides as the panels do warp a little. I would definitely order this product again for another project.
