Q:What zone are Chillicothe
by|Apr 18, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Chillicothe, Ohio, is located in USDA Hardiness Zone 6a. While Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) is generally hardy in Zones 7-11, it can tolerate Zone 6 with some winter protection. In colder climates like Zone 6, Pampas Grass may experience dieback of foliage during winter months, but it typically regrows in spring or could perish altogether. To improve its chances of survival in Zone 6, consider planting Pampas Grass in a sheltered location, providing a thick layer of mulch around the base for insulation, and wrapping the foliage with burlap or other protective covering during extreme cold snaps. With proper care and winter protection, Pampas Grass can still thrive and add ornamental value to gardens in Chillicothe, Ohio, but you might consider finding a ornamental grass that is better suited for your environment.

Q:Can I prune these? Are they dead?
    by|Mar 16, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Yes, you can prune Pampas Grass in early spring before new growth emerges. Use sharp pruning shears to remove dead or damaged foliage, cutting back to about 6-12 inches above the ground. When determining if parts of the Pampas Grass are dead, examine the foliage closely. Dead leaves will be dry, brittle, and easily detached from the plant. Live foliage will be firm, pliable, and show signs of greenness or vitality. Additionally, if the center of the plant appears brown and mushy, it may indicate rot and require further investigation. Overall, pruning and removing dead or damaged growth in early spring help promote healthy regrowth and maintain the aesthetic appeal of Pampas Grass.

Q:How much do these grow in their first year? I know it takes 2-3 years for blooms, but what can I expect the year of purchasing?
      by|Mar 7, 2024
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  In their first year after purchasing, Pampas Grass plants typically establish their root systems and develop foliage rather than producing significant growth above ground. While individual growth rates may vary depending on factors like climate and soil conditions, you can generally expect young Pampas Grass plants to grow several feet in height during their first year, especially if provided with optimal growing conditions such as adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients. However, significant blooming usually occurs in the second or third year as the plant matures.

        Q:What zones to plant?
        by|Sep 16, 2023
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Pampas Grass thrives in USDA hardiness zones 7 through 11. These zones encompass a range of climates, from temperate to subtropical, where the grass can grow successfully. In colder regions (7 and below), it may require protection in cases of unusual cold or special care during winter months to survive.

Not sure if these are salvageable
Bought a year ago and I’m not sure if I can remove the dried leaves?

            Not white as promised
I was very excited when I found this plant in early spring as I have been wanting the white pampas grass bloom look in my garden. I purchased 6 plants and care for them all summer, waiting for once again, white flowers. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED at the moment, only one plant produced flowers (3 to be exact) and they are PINK! This is a scam! Why is HomeDepot falsely advertising??? 3 other plants are not doing so well, hopefully they will survive the winter.

Not really. The first plant I bought died so I bought a second. It’s not growing much either. The lemongrass that I bought grew like crazy. Not sure what to expect.

              Very pretty
These came in great shape and well packaged. I hope I can get them planted before March 2021 ends. Looking forward to the giant plumes.
