Q:How does the duct fasten to the vent? The cable tie seems inadequate and flimsy to secure the duct to the vent without it slipping off or eventually coming loose in time. Is there a better method to attach the duct to the vent besides a cable tie?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Roger, Thank you for your question on the RVK1A roof venting kit. The duct work is normally attached to the cap with duct tape or silver tape.

          Prepare to modify
I like Broan Products but it took me 2 days to install this roof vent. The roof installation went fine as can be expected. The 4" duct connector was oversized and at one point I almost had the flex-pipe on part way. I ended up destroying the flex-pipe and after struggling for hours, decided to grind the rivets and spot-weld the connector to a little smaller size and used hard-pipe. Good thing its warm outside! Because I couldn't put the new insulation or drywall up. "USE BETTER QUALITY CONTROL"

A good roof vent with gravity closing damper to keep vold air from entering the vent tube
Simple roof vent to let bathroom fan air exit the house. Good instructions that are easy to follow.

Watch This Old House for installation tips
Install went very well thanks to watching This Old House on YT. Search for "How to Vent a Bath Fan Through the Roof". He uses this exact vent cap BUT ditches the screw-on duct connector for a regular one that you cut tabs and nail to the roof. It was so easy attaching my duct to the crimped 4" duct connector (HD SKU # 597972), pulling it through my hole and fixing it to the roof. It would have been a huge pain trying to deal with the duct, connector, cap, sealant, etc all in one step. I also upgraded to an insulated duct. The only thing I used from the kit is the vent cap as the kit was all I had available locally.

              Pretty decent vent kit
This would be a better kit if instead of zip ties, it used either spring clamps or screw clamps to hold the vent tube in place. Taping it with good aluminum tape is absolutely essential. That’s the only reason I knocked it down to 4 stars. It would also be good if the vent tube was insulated. I chose to insulate it, with a wrap of Reflectix bubble insulation. 16” wide Reflectix exactly wraps the 4” tubing when it’s pulled out. It still remains relatively flexible when wrapped. The vent itself is pretty decent, though, and as roof vents go, it was relatively easy to install. It’s small enough to be relatively unobtrusive, but is large enough to do the job.

Roofing contractor installed vents and we connected hoses to fans....
Roofing contractor installed vents and we connected hoses to fans. Contractor would have installed pipe stacks but we prefer the vent kit style. Easyzip ties to attach hoses and foam strips extras got used to adapt hose to an older fan with a smaller diameter exhaust housing.

If you aren't afraid of DIY projects, this will be manageable. Do not install on a flat roof. Don't forget a couple of nails, hammer, jigsaw, extension cord, duct tape, roof cement, a mixer, and a brush to apply the cement.

They work well and are stylish
I was looking for new roof vents for my two bathrooms and found these, which look really good and also come with the flex duct & other accessories. I was getting my roof replaced at the time and these vents worked out well. It's also designed to prevent back flow.

                Good value, easy to install
I bought two of these kits as I had two bath fans which were exhausting to the attic. They had excellent instructions and went in easily. Only suggestion would be to include the sealing tape in addition t the tie wrap for a code complete kit. One installation as a straight shot from the fan was pretty close to the peak of the roof. This one catches the wind and so makes a bit of flapper noise on a windy day. Maybe an added note to the instructions that this may no be the best place, and a little angle on the vent line is OK.

The vent screen is off poor design. It is not attached to the vent with any kind of hardware therefore any animals can enter by pushing the screen inwards.
