Q:When applying the oil stain do I need to wipe off with a dry rag or leave on .
by|May 2, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Kenneth, thanks for the question. If you are applying our Penetrating Oil Stain, you don't need to wipe it off with a rag, but you want to apply a thin, even coat to ensure there isn't any puddling on the wood. If you are using our Water-based stain, two coats of stain are recommended. Have a great day! -Ronald

Q:Hello, Thanks for taking my question, can I apply this stain/sealer over Thompson's water sealer? Thanks, JIM

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi James, thank you for your question. The Water-Based Semi-Transparent Wood Stain can be applied over existing water-based stains. However, you may see a mix of colors between the previous coating and the new coating, and it's always best to apply this stain to a bare, uncoated surface or coating of the same color. To ensure compatibility, I recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of the sealer you currently have to inquire about what can be applied on top. Have a great day! - Randy

Q:Can you use over previous coat of oil base wood stain ?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Joey, thank you for your question. As it turns out, we do not recommend applying our water-based Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer over an oil-based coating Alternatively, you can use our Semi-Transparent Penetrating Oil Waterproofing Stain & Sealer as it can be applied over an oil-based coating that's in good sound condition. Please feel free to reach out to us directly if you have any other questions. -Lina

Terrible! The worst product I've ever used! It peels in 2 months or if anything touches it that's harder than a sneaker. You have to keep buying it and reapplying because it looks like crap all the time. I wish I had never put it on my deck. It's impossible to get it into cracks of the wood when you spread it, and it turns white if the humidity is too high and the temperature drops overnight even though it's within the temperature range. You have to stay off of it for 2 days for it to cure, and it shows every footprint, even if your shoes are clean. I wish I had never put it on my deck. If I weren't moving, I would replace the deck boards so that I could use something else!

Yep. It's not "Redwood" It's ORANGE.
I wish I had read the reviews before purchase. I wanted a redwood color. The sample shows redwood. The can shows redwood. But the paint is NOT redwood. It's "orangewood". Like everyone else, after opening I went ahead and used it, thinking it was an optical illusion. Nope. It looks the same on the fence as it does on the can. I have a picture here of the old weathered fence that was stained redwood 10 years ago, next to the new fence painted with Redwood 330.

            Very Orange
My deck wood was prepared properly…power washed and had not been previously stained with any other color. The stain was easy to apply, but the result looks like I painted my deck bright orange. The color is nothing like what was shown on the store displays or in the pamphlet or the picture on the can. The only thing I can think of to do is find a stain with much more brown pigment in it to cover up the orange, but I don’t see that color option made by Behr. I did not plan for the expense or time to do this job twice. It’s extra disappointing because I have always used Behr paints and stains. They should not be advertising that this stain is a light tan when it is VERY orange.

Hi Quinn, thank you for your review. I'm terribly sorry to hear your color doesn't look as expected. That is not the experience we want for our customers, especially compared to the previous positive results with our products. Our Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is influenced by the original tone and color of the wood, which can impact the finish. To fix the issue without removing the stain, I recommend coating the deck with our Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer. It will provide an opaque finish in the color of your choice. Alternatively, you can remove the stain by stripping or sanding. Then, wash the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner before restaining with your desired color once dry. I recommend checking out the color Padre Brown ST-105. You can apply the stain on a small inconspicuous area to test the color before proceeding. Nonetheless, your satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can learn more about your project and assist. We look forward to hearing from you! -Lina Behr
              Color not what we thought
Disappointed how the color turned out on our new deck. It’s a bit too orange-ish for us. While we like UT, not a fan of the Cedar Naturaltone color.

                Terrible color
This is a rust-colored paint. The finished color looks very very different than the outside of the can, as you can see from the photo. It in no way resembles actual wood. Very unhappy with how it turned out.

Highly Recommend. Stained deck in November 2021. Still looks good March 2024. Initially it appeared very orange. Weathering subdued orange to red-brown hue over a few months. Deck is large Southwest facing exposed to sun, rain and wind tunnel through property. This is best stain I have ever used. Previously I stained deck annually. With this stain looks like its going to be every 3 years because I wont re-stain again until Fall 2024. It took longer to cure than label indicated. I let it cure for two days before using and I followed all the prep guidelines. Inconvenient but worth the hassle. The deck is 20 years old and I got tired of doing this maintenance every single year, so thanks Behr Premium. You made my life a lot easier.

                      Didn’t last a year
Cleaned and prepped deck as directed. Didn’t even last through one winter before starting to peel.

Hi Toni, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear the stain did not last up to one winter. I can understand your disappointment since the paint isn't performing as expected. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we want to help. To fix this, I recommend removing the loose coating, sand the edges smooth, clean with our All-One-Wood Cleaner No. 063 (which helps with adhesion), and touch up. When dry, apply a very thin coat of stain over the entire surface for uniformity. Please feel free to reach out to us directly for further assistance.
