  • Great Addition to Our Winter Vacation Home
  • December 27, 2013
  • Recommended Product

For years we've been driving up to our vacation home in Truckee at North Shore, Lake Tahoe, CA and in the winter the house was cold and took forever to warm up. Now I set the thermostat to the warm temperature that we like before we leave and when we arrive the house is toasty warm. Easy to install with good instructions and great on-line video. Once installed, super easy to program and set up the wi-fi account. So far it has worked flawlessly. After much research I selected this model because I wanted touch screen but didn't need all the bells and whistles of the $200+ models. I am recommending this wi-fi thermostat to all my mountain friends.

  • Convenient, may not be for everyone

I was interested in this thermostat for the wifi connectivity and with the hopes that it could save me money on energy costs. It's too soon to decide that yet, but I'm not sure if it will. First of all, the overall quality of the thermostat is great. It looks nice (THOUGH IT'S HUGE), and is easy to operate either from the device or over the internet. It has a back-lit LCD display that always glows a reassuring electric green. The device is nice but it draws the eye to it and doesn't fade into the background the way you would want a thermostat to. Installation was easy, though I was missing a power line from my furnace (my last thermostat didn't require one but it was buried in the wall) so it took me a bit longer to install then it should have. Once installed I grabbed a laptop and logged into the thermostat and then onto the web to set it up. This process took about 30 min in total as it downloaded an update to the device that took about 10 min itself. I've never been a big fan of the programmable thermostat because it always seemed to take more time to set it up then it's worth. The setup on the web was straightforward and simple so anyone could figure it out, though if you're squeamish about technology you may want to have someone else walk you through this process. Overall this was the easiest time I've ever had programming a thermostat. The website asked for more information than I would normally give out (wanted home address, name, phone, etc.) and there's no mention as to what data they're collecting and tracking, but I'm sure they're doing it. And the web app really only lets you set the schedule for the thermostat. It does tell you temperature inside and outside and can email you on events. It will notify you if the temperature drops below a user specified threshold for a certain amount of time, or it can notify you on any event you'd like (fan goes on/off, temp changed, etc.). Could be a nice feature if you're concerned about others constantly changing the temp. Aside from that there doesn't seem to be much added functionality from the wifi connection, though it is really nice to be able to set the temp from my phone whether I'm in the house or not. Essentially this is a rather large programmable thermostat that you can access remotely. It's nice, but aside from the ability to program it remotely there's not really much added value over a less expensive and smaller programmable thermostat. I'd recommend this for the household that wants to micro-manage their heating/cooling. If you're someone who wants to set up a thermostat and forget about it you should probably just get a less expensive model without the wifi. Hopefully Honewell will include some software in the future to allow you to monitor energy use a little better or even to integrate it with data from your Utility so you can get more out of it.

I am very happy with it. I was able to install it myself by carefully following the enclosed instructions. My older thermostat was missing the G connection but you tube had a video showing how to solve that problem. I also had a small issue connecting to my internet but again I found a troubleshooting video about re connecting and it worked for me. I did not have to call some one in to help. This is the 1st time I have installed a thermostat. I downloaded an app to my smart phone to enable me to change the temp when I am away from home. I also qualified for a $125.00 rebate from Southern CA Edison and So Cal Gas Company. By the way, I am a 66 year old lady.

  • It's ok...a little to expensive for the overall look.

It does what it's designed for. However, not happy with visible circuitry(?) lines on screen. I had exchanged the first one thinking it was a defect, but it's just their design. Also, the screen could be brighter and numbers more visible. Installing it was quite easy, provided you have all the necessary wires in the wall. Setting/controlling and viewing the thermostat thru the app on my iPhone has worked great! It was also easy to connect to wifi and setup thru mytotalhomeconnect site. This was the primary reason for my purchase. My recommendation, buy it when it's on sale.

We love our new touch screen thermostat. It works great. Love the wifi feature and app. Would be even more nice if it had a screen lock feature. But, all in all, we absolutely love it. It was easy to install. The wiring part wasn't as easy. But it was well worth it once it started working. I recommend this thermostat to anyone who loves technology.

I was able to easily install two of these thermostats in my home to replace two aging thermostats, though I did have an HVAC tech run a common wire to one of my systems, which is required for0000 this thermostat. Getting them connected to wi-fi and installing the app was also very easy. I can control both thermostats from my phone from anywhere. I haven't used the programmable options yet, but would recommend this product to anyone.

  • OK... But...

Easy to install and set up. The app was easy to set up and works fine. However, it cycles the furnace on way too often. It takes less than a one degree difference to cycle the furnace on. Sometimes it is less than five minutes between cycles. I can picture having to replace my furnace in the next few years because it is worn out. I called Honeywell support and they said there is no setting that I can change. I asked them if they were going to possibly do some kind of software update to correct this. They really did not think that this is an issue.

  • Register Product Before Trying to Fully Connect to WiFi
  • October 06, 2012

The installation of the Thermostat was easy enough. Remove the old thermostat and mounting plate. use the included decals with the new thermostat to identify the color of wire to the correct terminal (don't rely on colors) The only "snag" i had was I did not have a dedicated "C" wire. I talked to a licensed pro for a work around, since pulling new wire was not an option. you can remove the "G" (fan) wire on the thermostat terminal and use it as the "C" wire. then on the furnace terminal you remove the "G" wire and also place it on the "C" terminal. THEN you have to make a jumper from the "Y" terminal to the "G" terminal on the furnace. This is so when the fan or AC kicks on it will also turn the fan on. The only down side to removing the "G" wire option is that you can no longer turn the fan to "on" it will work as needed and as normal when in the AUTO mode when the AC and Heat come on. i never just used the fan without the heater or AC so it made no difference to me. The only other issue I had was connecting the WiFi. when i was selecting my home network i kept getting a "REQUEST TIMED OUT" error. I finally just registered the thermostat online and the thermostat connected just fine, however it still shows on the network connection page as "REQUEST TIMED OUT" even though it is connected. My advise is to open the network connection page, enter your password, then register your product. do not wait for the network page to say that the devise is connected. mine still doesn't. Using the App is nice and convenient. i tend to use this more than the online option. I've already had to use it when the temperature dropped while we were gone. I was able to turn the heat on so we did not come home to a cold house.

  • Big Dissapointment
  • March 23, 2015

The big drawback is that while the thermostat can communicate on your wireless network, you are required to use an internet connection and connect to their cloud based web portal service to control the thermostat. You can not connect directly via your local network. Honeywell's Terms of Service indicate that they have the right to charge a fee for use of their web based portal so at some point in time you could have to pay to control your thermostat via wifi. Also, this brings up security concerns as well.

Also, it's not on web description, but it can control up to 2 stages of cooling and 2 stages of heating. You'll find that in the System Set Up section of the user guide.
