I have successfully used Rust-o-leum products for years but undoing the damage caused by their Restore paint cost me over $1300, put me weeks behind in preparing my house for sale, and many full days of taxing manual labor. I was just going to clean my deck so it would look nice for selling my house but when I sprayed the deck with water the Restore paint peeled off in some areas while adhering like the product 'Liquid Nails' adhesive' in others. It looked awful. The Restore Paint actually rotted the wood that it trapped beneath it. About 1/6 of the wood for my deck had to be replaced but that was the easy part. Fully undoing the damage caused by Restore Paint required the entire deck had to be taken down to bare wood which proved extremely difficult. I started removing the Restore Paint by renting a 3400 PSI pressure washer, followed by a vibrating floor sander, and eventually a drum floor sander (24 grit sandpaper) for the larger surfaces and angle grinder with steel wire brush attachment to get the edges cleaned off. I'm 63 yo woman and I didn't appreciate the strenuous work let alone the financial cost while living only my savings. When I contacted Rest-o-leum about their Restore product their young lady apologized and promised me a check for $135---->never received. The $135 wouldn't undo my loss of time or money and it definitely wouldn't undo the physical or emotional stress caused by having to redo my entire deck but it might have at the least demonstrated a little regret and/or integrity on behalf of the company. They demonstrated neither. I cannot recommend Rust-o-leum products like I have to family and friends in the past and I definitely warn anyone and everyone not to use Restore Paint.

      Don’t buy this!!!!
First I would like to say I loved the way it looked when i was done . Lasted all summer. Used this product year after year. That’s the only positive. I followed the reccomendations from rustoleum. Even used the primer first this time . The problem is it peels after the winter. Usually it was a spot here and there. This year big sections of my deck is peeling. It looks horrible! I spent a lot of money and time doing this . Now I am livid!!!! They should give me a refund. Plus send someone over to peel all of it off. I beg whoever is reading this DO NOT BUY THIS! You will regret it .

Started peeing off after one year. Don’t put this on, what a waste of time and money. Now trying to peel and scrape off what’s left to re-oil.

I have a rather large evaluated deck attached to my house. I used this product for the first time around 5 years ago, thinking maybe I wouldn't be retreating my deck again for a few years. Man was I wrong. After the first year, this material began to peal, especially on newer wood. Of course, now my deck has this stuff all over it, and you're kind of stuck unless you want to remove it all. So, I go to get more (assuming the pealing was due to something I did wrong). The folks at HD now tell me that they are recommending that customers use a primer before applying Restore. I wonder if it's because the stuff peals? I put the primer down on the bare spots and reapply Restore. Sure enough, The next year, it's coming up again. I am now trying to figure out what I can do to bring back my lovely deck. This stuff has adhered in some places and pealed again over the winter in others. Oh, and the color match from mix to mix is terrible. My deck looks like I have 5 different colors for each year I tried to repair it. It should at least be close. So, I'm going to pressure wash and scrape what I have. Re-apply this stuff on the bare patches of wood for consistency, then hope I can find a solid stain or paint for the entire surface so that it's not a patchwork of colors. This material has taken a yearly ritual of preserving the wood on my deck and turned it into a nightmare. I have continually told friends to stay away from this product.

Uh-oh, thanks for bringing this to our attention! Keep in mind, the new wood may be wet with chemicals or have mill glaze from the manufacturing process. New wood should age for a minimum of 6 months before applying Rust-Oleum Restore 4X Deck Coat. The lumber must be dry completely before applying the product to prevent peeling of the coating. The surface must also be properly cleaned and prepared using Rust-Oleum Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner to remove all foreign material and mill glaze prior to application. Follow the preparation instructions to ensure the product adheres properly to the wood. Preparation is key for the product to adhere properly. I used this product on our deck and have regretted it ever since. Before painting, I power washed our deck using the recommended prep products. The paint looked great the first summer, but by the next year it was chipping away. This year, large sheets of paint are peeling away and it looks horrible! I'm so disappointed in the amount of work it took to use this product. I would have given this product zero stars, but that was not an option. I never leave feedback on products but hope someone reads this and decides to pass on using this paint.

Horrible product. Applied as directed and by the next summer it had started to peel. Just kept getting worse. Now having to strip 750 sq ft of deck to get it off. Power washer does not do it. Would not recommend this product to anyone. Having to have it professionally stripped. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Can't believe they are still selling it in Home Depot store's.

Based upon some of the reviews, maybe I'm lucky, but I just pressure washed my deck 3 years ago and applied two coats and it still looks great, no peeling even cleans up well with a stiff brush and no peeling. I had to do a third coat to a few knots that oozed up and looked bad, but I'm about to change color and I plan to use the Restore again.

I did my patio 3 years ago and noticed it started to bubble up and peel so wanted to put another coat on. I cleaned the cement with a concrete cleaner, scraped and sanded down the areas that bubbled up. I then put on the new product and within days the bubbling came back. Rust-Oleum is a reputable company and I'm surprised with all the complaints they didn't try and fix the product. Will not buy it again. will buy the Home Depot Behr product next time.

                              Great!
My deck was 30 years old. It was not that bad of shape where I needed the 10x. I got the old paint off with power washer and for hard to get off paint I used citristrip. I followed directions perfectly, even the weather cooperated perfect. I'm on year 3 and it looks like I just painted it. You won't regret it! Never shovel, salt, or power wash your painted deck. Very little cleaner and water to clean up!

We are so happy about this product! We applied it on our deck, years ago, and it still looks great! The key is to prep the deck perfectly. Then you have to put the product on super thick, and reapply another thick coat the next day. Also, make sure the weather is hot, because it seems to work best when it's hot out. This is one of the best products ever! Our deck continues to look great, since we used Restore!

Big mistake putting on your deck
Put this paint on my deck after hours of preparation and cleaning the surface. It pealed, blistered and the rain got under the blisters threatening rot of the wood. I am in the process of painstakingly stripping it off my deck right now. I complained to the Home Depot where I got it and got no satisfaction whatsoever. I even contacted Rust-Oleum company sending pictures of the damage with no satisfaction either. The endless days and hours spent applying this product to the surface of my bare wood deck must now be spent stripping it off and applying another product. Will not take the chance of using a Rust-Oleum product again. Bad Bad Bad product!!!!

We followed all directions for prepping and applying this product. It looked amazing all summer long and I loved it. Then winter came it snowed by spring my deck looked horrible. It peeled off in sheets , cracked and bubbled all over. Thankfully Rustolem refunded my money (several hundred dollars) but removing the product and prepping to go back to stain has been a nightmare. Stick with traditional stain and save yourself a lot of work and frustration.

Product was as expected. Application was a pain with my deck. Yes my deck boards are uneven. With the 9" roller, we had to do 1-2 boards perpendicular. Could bot go with the runs of the boards. A 6" roller would work great. I did do this but I think you can get better coverage with a brush. If you need the texture use the roller on the 2nd coat. Gonna let it cure and see if I need to add more texture. That topcoat wullbe applied with the 4" roller or I will cut a 9" roller down to 6".
