I bought this to attach to a Troy Bilt trimmer with a 4 cycle engine. It is isn't good for precision trimming. I finish up some shrubs with my handheld electric hedge trimmer for a more precision look. With my Troy Bilt, I need to make use of positioning the hedge trimmer attachment so that I don't stall the engine. I can position the attachment in all three position holes encompassing 270 degrees of travel. If I keep the carburator in the "normal" position or facing up, everything works ok. However, if I face the carburator down, I have stalling problems that can be painful to correct. Other than that, it sure beats dragging around and periodically cutting an electric cord with my other hedge trimmers. If a reconditioned item is available for any product, I always buy it instead of new. The money savings are great and have seldom had problems with reconditioned.

Good Unit Overall
I was looking for an extended reach hedger for some of those hard to reach jobs. This was an inexpensive solution to the problem. As an expansion unit to the trimmer I already have it fit nicely.
The ony negative to the unit I have is the felt square that is at the base of the blade was gone with in moments after the first use.
This is not a crisis, but will require watching that area for debris getting into the mechanism.

Expand-It Hedge Trimmer Attachment
I could you a trimmer which could be angled parallel to the ground.
That way I could use it to cut grass/mow grass.
also I'd like a small trimmer which operates mechanically
like this trimmer. that would be a perfect accessory for this tool.
this would be a 3 or 4 tooth in line front mounted parallel to ground.
I remember (back in tha day) seeing these hand powered trimmers
something like that would be Great cause I could do light detail
trimming without bending over.

Sturdy but can become heavy.
This attachment can be used on any brand that as the universal power head connection. It is durable as I am not one who is delicate when it comes to utilizing power tools. The one negative I have to mention is that after using it for a while it can become quite heavy. I have 5 acres in SE Arizona with 100+ Mesquite trees and I use this to trim trim the new growth after the monsoon starts and the trees begin growing. It has reduced my trimming time tremendously and I have had zero problems with it.

Wish I'd bought this sooner
I read the reviews of this hedge trimmer and was really torn whether buy it or not. I found a lot of reviews
having problems with reliability and I questioned the reliability of a refurbished unit but to my relief
I have had not any problems and right out of the box I tested its performance. I had to do some heavy trimming on some very old holly bushes at our church that had some limbs in half inch range and it performed above my expectations. While I don't recommend doing this all the time it will cut them as long as your trimmer head is powerful enough. I used this trimmer for over two hours straight without giving it or me a break. While it is somewhat awkward using because of being such a long piece of equipment after being attached to a power head and it does get heavy, it still beats dragging around a 100 foot extension cord .For just maintenance around your house, it is great. If you have to do much horizontal trimming above head high, I suggest you get an articulating trimmer but for $40.00 this one suits me just fine.

Very Disappointing
The hedger worked very well the first year of use. Trimmed everything with little issues. Then it seemed to lose power. Twigs started jamming the blades. Next, it seems the thing got very hot. I could tell the gears were slipping/stripping. I was only trimming simple bushes. I am very disappointed by the longevity of this unit. It will not last. I've had it for two years. It is basically inoperable now. Keep that in mind. I will say that it is very easy to use though... the only reason for 2 stars! Very handy for large and tall shrubs.

Excellent Reconditioned Value!
This reconditioned hedge trimmer is a good value, and shipped to store free for pickup. Used it one time so far and works just as advertised. Manual says to oil before and after each use, so did that and I think it will prove to have a long, useful life.

Didn't Cut a Thing
The trimmer would not cut a thing. I even tried in on a lavender plant since it was an easy cut, and it did not cut a thing. I pulled out my 20 year old black and decker that I was trying to replace to complete the job. Very disappointing.

Not so good...
I had read some reviews and noted that some people had problems with this attachment. I was hoping they were isolated incidents and that I would be one of the satisfied ones. Mine seemed to work OK when I installed it on my Craftsman motor, but stopped as soon as I started trimming some branches. This was similar to the experiences other reviewers reported. I disassembled it and was able to make it work, but it would have been much better to have it function correctly as purchased. The item I bought was refurbished, I don't think it was tested before being resold to me.

Did not work.
Never touched a bush with it. Could hear and feel internals rotating in the unit, but blades moved s l o w l y. One full back-and-forth cycle every 90 seconds slow. You would think, as a recon, that it would be tested. That guy failed.

Useless tool-look elsewhere!!!
Out of the box the trimmer would operate only at a very slow speed but as soon as the speed is increased to a usable speed the trimmer blades stop moving completely. It appears that the cable is too short to engage the gas powered head completely and as soon as the speed is increased to a usable speed, the cable disconnects from the head. I'm using with a Craftsman gas powered head. Do not recommend not only from my experience but also there are scores of complaints about this unit on various internet sites. I have several other Ryobi Expand-it items and they all work perfectly but there must be an issue with the design of this hedge trimmer.
Unfortunately, I purchased this reconditioned hedge trimmer attachment in late October and received the 1st of November but due to some health issues didn't get a chance to try to use it until February (after the manufacturers and Home Depot's warranty ran out).

Works as I intended it to.
I purchased this trimmer to specifically trim a Red Tip Photinia hedge that is about 6 feet high. It did a marvelous job reaching from the front of the hedge to the fence. When I cut it with an electric trimmer I had to shove my ladder into the hedge just to reach all the way to the fence. No more now I can reach all the way to the back with ease. I only wish that my Troy-Built power head wasn't so heavy. I have also found that the edger cuts Hawthornes, Box Leaves, Loropetalum's, and knockout roses with ease. I had a little trouble trimming my Oleander bushes with it though. The limbs were a little to large for the trimmer which made for a slow task. It did cut it successfully, but it was slow going.
The quality of the trimmer was very good and it fit onto my Troy-Built weed eater just fine. The blades seem to oscillate back and forth faster than my old electric trimmer. I do not know if that is good or bad because I had to back off on the speed of the power head to have better luck with the oleander bushes. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one of these refurbished units. For the price you would be hard pressed to beat this deal.

Expand It Hedge Trimer and Power Supply
I had doubts about the expand it system but needed a long handled extension hedge trimmer. However it has turned out to be a great buy. I bought the electric cord power supply and the extended hedge trimmer. It has excellent cutting power and reach. It can be taken apart and stored without difficulty. The only complaint is the trigger system. It is not very responsive. It has a safety grip lock on top of the handle and a squeeze trigger below. You must squeeze both to operate. Great for safety but a little hard to manipulate even for big hands.
I purchased a Ryobi electric edger about 15 years ago and still use it. I hope the mechanical and moving parts to this expand It hedge trimmer holds up as well.

Much nicer than using manual shears
A friend recommended this tool. It saves me an hour of time compared to using manual shears to trim bushes. Because it attaches to the powerhead, it's a little bit unwieldy compared to a dedicated trimmer, but still easy to use.

Great Overall
Already had a weed eater so the attachment made for a cheap trimmer. It has plenty of HP. It will cut anything that will fit in between the blades. Only bad thing is the overall length makes it cumbersome.
