This unit produces a high voltage pulse about once per second. Touching it gives a shock akin to a spark plug wire on a running car. It won't kill, but you'd definitely want to avoid touching it ever again! Since it produces high voltage, connecting wires must be thoroughly insulated, particularly those near any sort of ground. A typical lamp cord wire would *not* be sufficient. That is, if a typical insulated wire got close to a ground, current would go through the insulation to the ground. Therefore, use only heavily insulated wires intended for high voltage. Many are available specifically for use connecting electric fences. Either that, or ensure none of your wires come anywhere near a ground. One other note: The ground connection (green side) should be buried at least a couple of feet deep. I wrapped a copper wire several times around a piece of pvc pipe, then pounded it into the ground. That worked fine.

So many people don't understand how these things work. It must be properly installed for one. Use galvanized steel (not copper) 6-8' grounding rods every 10'. Yes copper is a better conductor, however is corrodes which causes impedance. Make sure to use aluminum line for the positive and make sure its not touching any foliage. No trees, shrubs or grass. If done right makes sure your soil isn't bone dry. Then take your shoes off. Now touch that line and I bet you won't want to touch it ever again.

I purchased this to keep deer out. Using my multimeter, I was initially very pleased that it delivered the amount of power promised. Unfortunately, the amount of power generated is not enough to deter anything. After seeing rabbits and deer walk through the fence and not be deterred, I tested it on myself. Yes, it delivers a jolt, but the jolt is about as powerful as your cellphone buzzing, so nothing that would even be close to a deterrent, even for small animals. I am exchanging this for a more powerful unit.

Never said anything about being an inside only charger so it was of no use to me.
