Received two panels (24 x 48) . After unboxing I noticed a strong chemical smell similar to popping open a jar of acrylic paint. Then upon first touch, the surface of my panels felt as though they were covered with fiberglass-like dust. These tiny particles easily transfer to your skin and create an itchy sensation (and can not be healthy to breath). I saw some references to the smell/gas in other reviews, but never thought the release from an acoustic panel could make a person ill... but it did. The first night after un-boxing I woke up in the middle of the night with the toxic taste and smell of the panels in my throat and sinuses. There was such a harsh chemical release that I had to wrap the panels with plastic garbage bags and put them in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on. ( I live in a high-rise without a balcony so I could not bring outside.) Though it is tempting to just throw them out, I want to get my $200 returned. So therefore I will be dealing with these for one more day. I am going to my nearest Home Depot first thing in the morning. This review is to question how a company can sell something that would actually make a customer sick?! Owens Corning did reply to some of the reviews here and acknowledged the gas/fumes/smell.

I purchased a handful of these to install on ceilings in an office building that had very unique designs and produced a lot of sound problems for the occupants. These panels only come with hardware for mounting to walls, but we used toggle bolt anchors and spray painted more decorative bolts to mount them to the ceiling. They came out looking pretty good and the staff at the offices noticed a big difference in the sound for the rooms. We plan on installing more of these in other areas with similar issues. We didn't paint these as they were going on white ceilings and we didn't want to risk the paint affecting the acoustic properties. The fiberglass construction feels a little sketchy, but just wear clean gloves when you're handling them and it shouldn't be an issue. The sound absorption properties were noticed more significantly in the smaller office. The bigger one still needs some panels installed on walls and possibly directly above the desk where the manager sits. Also, we tried ordering some 24"x48" panels to do some other areas, but almost all of them had damaged corners and we returned them to just order more of these. None of the 24"x24" panels we ordered came damaged. In summary, good product at a decent price. Best to wear gloves when handling. Don't order 24"x48" panels.

      these REALLY work!!
Oh so pricey, but they really work! I downsized to a small house - my daughter’s room is just a few feet away and we are on different time schedules. As she talks and laughs with her friends, it woke me up. She installed two sets, putting cloth tapestries over them as art. She used a stapler to attach the tapestries with no problems I’ve only heard her ONCE since then. Even the AC vent sound is noticably reduced as soon as you enter her room. A slight smell once the plastic wrapper is removed at first for a couple of hours (we put it in the storage room) so the odor issue must have been resolved. Smells much like new fabric in a store to give an idea. Im going to put them on my ceiling in my room because there is not much wall space available. One of the packs did not come with the attachment, but we were able to attach with screws. The ONLY reason not five stars is the price. If you REALLY need something to work right now and are willing to pay $240 for 16 square feet (I suggest at least 32 sq ft for an average 12 x 12 room just in my circumstances) then this will work!! I want more for the rest of my house now...

After I put one very thin coat of paint on these sound panels the sound absorbing properties were cut in half. Painting them almost renders them useless. I would NOT recommend painting these.

Hello Brad. Thank you for your review. The method in which the panels are painted can affect the sound absorbing qualities. Brush/roller painting and spray can painting are not recommended. Use of an airless paint sprayer with a fine tip is the recommended method for painting these panels. Care should be taken not to flood out areas with too much paint that the fiber weave becomes filled. It should only take one or two medium wet coats to cover.

Good looking way to quiet things down.
These styrofoam backed fabric panels are stylish and meant to accent room decor without being obtrusive. These panels are the perfect solution when the shape of a room and the hardness of the surfaces encountered in it produce echos which cut down drastically on the ability of persons to understand normal speech. They are covered with a coarse but attractive cloth. Once in place, other decorative materials or objects may be hung on them. Mounting hardware is included with them which will allow placement on almost any wall surface including hard materials such as brick or cement. Four mounting plates with three sharp tines protruding can be screwed to the wall and the panel simply hung from these. This makes the panel easily adjustable in terms of placement.

        Nicer than expected
The box showed up at my house badly damaged. When I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised to see the manufacturer had the foresight to place the panels in the box with the nice sides facing inward, so the damage was on the back side of the panel. My second pleasant surprise was how nice the fabric was! I was expecting to have to re-cover these with better looking fabric, but it looks so much better than I expected I actually wish I could get more of this fabric to cover my speaker grills. If you can use basic hand tools you’ll have no issues installing these panels with the included hardware. It’s very straightforward and easy. Of course they do the job they’re supposed to do, but they look terrific while doing it!

great for decor and acoustic properties
The acoustic panels are a 5 star win. I will admit that I did not pick these up initially for their acoustic properties. I picked them up to add some contrast to the bare white walls in my office. More for decor than acoustic properties. With that being said I will get to why I think these panels are so great. First of all the panels come in all types of colors to choose from when ordering and if you don't like the colors they are already made in you can choose panels with a paintable fabric. Owens Corning really had the average consumer like myself in mind when producing these panels. The panels are well made of a dense acoustic foam substance that makes them very rigid and fabric is glued and stretched around the panels very tightly. Installation is as easy as it gets. You get 2 panels and it comes with all the hardware you need to mount both panels. The panels are secured to the wall via a spiked mounting plate. Along with the included anchor screws and the light weight of each panel. There is no need to fuss around with finding studs. They can be mounted directly to the drywall and that's saying a lot coming from me because I always try to avoid mounting anything in drywall only. It is in no way crucial and quite frankly would be a waste of time to try and measure out and line up each impaling clip (Spiked mounting plates), as the alignment of these clips does not in anyway affect the alignment of the panel on the wall. So basically you measure and get a rough idea of where you want the panel. Mount 2 plates on top and 1 at the bottom of where the panel will be placed. Again you do not have to worry about them being perfectly aligned. One the mounting plates are secured to the wall you simply live the panel to where you want it to go on the wall press it into the mounting plates and apply a downward force at the same time. The spiked impale the back of the panel securing it to the wall. Installation of these panels just could not be easier As I said I did not purchase these for acoustic properties but after installing them on my wall I found that they had great acoustic properties. My office is sparsely furnished with only a desk, tv, stool, and my road bike. So there is usually an echo when you talked. After mounting a few of these panels on the wall the echo was pretty much gone. Another thing I notice as well is that with the panels up I am able to hear the audio from my tv better. Built flat screen tv speakers dont usually project very well so it can be hard to hear the tv when you are sitting fairly far back from it. These panels allow me to keep the tv at a lower volume now than usual. My only concern with these panels is the corners of them are a little weak. So Id advise people to be careful of the corners of these panels until you get them mounted on the wall. Dropping the panel or placing it down hard on the corner will dent the corner. Other than that I would give these panels 6 stars if I could. They gave my office some contrast while not being to overstated which is what I was looking for. They are well made and very easy to install. They also have great acoustic properties. So weather you are looking for something to decorate your wall are something to cut down on noises in the room. Id give these a try.

Excellent sound absorbing panels, paintable option makes them more discreet
I have a home office with a tile floor and relatively bare walls, and the sound reflections were noticeable, particularly when recording any audio, so I wanted something to reduce sound reflections. The fabric covered version of these panels worked and looked great on my walls, but I used these paintable panels to hang from the ceiling. I first painted them the same color as my office and ceiling (a very light tan / off white). I would definitely recommend following the instructions for painting this panel (see the video for instructions) and using a full width, thick nap roller. I initially tried using a small foam roller, but that produced lines where slightly more primer and paint was applied at the edges of the small roller. I repainted the panels with a full size thick nap roller, and the results were much better. Don't skimp on the roller and you'll get great results. The panels come with mounting clips to mount them on walls, but there are no instructions or hardware for ceiling mounting. The panels aren't particularly heavy, so ceiling mounting hardware doesn't have to be very heavy duty, but I didn't want them falling on my head if one came loose. After thinking about possible options for ceiling mounting, I came up with the idea of attaching some 1/4" plywood to the back of the panels using construction adhesive. I then purchased some metal eyes, metal hooks, and small chain from Home Depot. I pre-drilled and screwed the eyes into the panels, and I pre-drilled and screwed the hooks into the studs in my ceiling. The small length of chain allows the panels to hang down from the ceiling, making them easy to install, and theoretically providing a little more sound absorption. See my photos on how I attached the hardware and hung them from the ceiling. Hanging the first panel from the ceiling by myself was far more tedious than I thought, but after I figured out a technique, the other panels were easy to hang. I think the painted panels look great, and the color match with the ceiling makes them more discreet than a colored fabric panel. With these panels on my ceiling and several others on the walls, my office sounds dramatically different. The mid and high frequency reflections are virtually gone now, and when I walk out of my office, the sound reflections I never noticed before are now very obvious. I can now record audio in my office with a dynamic microphone and it sounds great. Phone calls and Skype calls are also much better, as my office is quieter overall. These panels are not designed to prevent external sound from entering a room (they are not "sound proofing"), but they do a fantastic job reducing sound reflections. One warning: When you unpack the panels, they have a very strong odor. Because I had 10 panels, the odor was so strong that I had to set them all outside for a week. After a week, the smell had reduced to the point where I could bring them inside. After sitting another week indoors, the odor was no longer detectable.

        Look great, definitely helped
Mounted these on my home office's hollow core door to help cut down on sound reflections. While they did not make as big of a difference as the panels mounted directly behind my desk, they did somewhat help with the room's acoustics since that door is at an angle to me and would reflect some of the sounds coming off the back wall. Installation was really easy since they aren't too big and only require 2 brackets each. The only con is that they emitted a strong smell right out of the box which went away after a day or so. If you're sensitive to smells, perhaps leaving them out in a different part of the house for a couple of days would be a good idea.

        Reduces ambient conversation noise
I put these panels in my office to reduce ambient conversation noise. I share an open office with hardwood floors and brick walls - a difficult place to work somedays with all the conversations bouncing off walls. I put these two panels near my desk (In the short term, I literally leaned them again the wall!) and it definitely made a difference. The panels are obviously not fixing the entire problem, but it does reduce the sound slightly which is worthwhile to me.

        Instant office makeover
I used this product in a conference room with thin walls to reduce sound. Easy to install, just screw the clips on the wall and smack the panel in - no excessive measuring required. The panels look great on the wall, not obtrusive just simple panels. No one immediately guessed they were sound panels. Most importantly, the panels immediately made a difference in the volume of noise that could be heard outside the conference room.

        The smell was too much..
As other reviewers have stated, there is an offgassing smell that these panels seem to have and it was unbearably strong. I had to put them outside, to dissipate the odor and it didn't help. The corners were also damaged. Because of the smell, I was not able to install them in the house as I was planning to use them in an enclosed space in the basement. They have a lot of potential but the odor needs to be addressed and packaging needs to protect the product better - since the package didnt look damaged.

        These really work
These really work to absorb room sound. I got them for my dedicated 16' x 33' listening room. After installing four of them I get more detailed sound reproduction. The color is more yellowish than I was expecting. The product description says Beige, the box they came in was labeled Vanilla. I've included a close-up photo so you can get an idea of the color. The panels arrived in good condition and are well finished with a tidy appearance. They come with a maintenance and cleaning guide. One thing I found odd in that guide was the admonition that "for more vigorous treatments on fabric-covered panels, the fabric manufacturer should be consulted." That would have been fine if they had told us who the fabric manufacturer is, but they didn't. Heavy duty drywall screws and "impaling" clips were provided, 3 clips per panel, 2 screws per clip. Installation went smoothly by following the instructions. Make sure that each clip is level and that the top pair of clips are level with each other, then hold the panel level before pushing onto the clips. They have a fairly strong chemical odor when first unwrapped that dissipates over a few weeks. I found that placing them in a closed room with an air purifier that has an odor filter helped reduce the smell quite a bit before installing them.

Great for lowering unwanted sounds and echos
Excellent product for killing sounds. This installation was in an office environment where the two workers talking on the phone interfered with the other's ability to work. Really cut down the background sounds by what seemed to be about 25% Installation was a breeze with just four clips that screw into the wall per panel and the panels just press onto those clips. This installation, with unpacking, setting up and measuring, took under one hour. Don't drop them while unpacking and installing. Be careful about the corners of these panels as they are the weak point of the product.

        It reduces sound
These panels absorb sound and make a room quieter. They work. Just one panel will absorb some sound and make a room quieter. Each panel is 24” x 24” x 1⅛” thick, covered with cloth which is glued at its edge on the back side of the panel. The panels are light, just 3½ pounds, and easy to handle. I wanted to cut down the noise of vehicle traffic in my bedroom where the road is just thirty feet away. To try their effectiveness I leaned a panel against the wall and placed another panel on top of it — they stayed in place without fasteners. The reduction in road noise was apparent. Vehicles made less noise as they passed by. Noise within the room — talking, radio, TV, was also reduced. It was as though I had hung a blanket on one wall, which muffled the sound. Quiet to me is precious. These panels do not have an odor. These panels in the 24” x 48” size did have a strong musty odor that took three weeks to dissipate. Instructions come with the panels for mounting them to a wall, along with two “Angled Impaling Clips” for each panel, each with three sheet rock screws. One clip is to be used near the top of the panel at the center, and one near the bottom at the center. The clips are attached to the sheet rock with three screws each. Each clip has an angled-at-45 degrees upward point onto which the panel is “impaled”. The clips hold the panel about 1/16” off of the wall. The cloth covering the panel can be cleaned with a vacuum or brush. I think the cloth covering the panel makes it impractical to trim the panel to a smaller dimension, for the cloth covering would then have an open edge which could unravel and might wrinkle. We found that the white panels blended easily with our white wood trim and pale yellow walls. The cloth can be painted. These panels do reduce sound, and they’re easy to mount and are unobtrusive.

Definitely reduces sound reflections in my office, nice soft blue color
I have mostly bare walls and a porcelain tile floor in my office, so I needed something to reduce sound reflections. I also have a few servers that generate hard drive and fan noise. I didn't know how well these panels would work in my office and how well they could block the server noise. It turns out that these panels are surprisingly effective--they have transformed my office, making it a great space for recording audio, and making the server noise much less noticeable. I wanted to install one of the panels on a wooden fireplace mantle, but didn't want to drill holes in the stained wood. So I tried using the 3M "Command" hanging strips to stick the panel mounting clips to the wood. That worked very well, the panel is very secure, and I didn't have to damage the wood. So if you have walls where you can't use screws, try the Command strips for the mounting clips. I mounted another panel on the back of one of my office doors, and to reduce the size of the holes in the door, I used small wood screws, which worked great. I used two more panels to cover my servers, just resting them on the ground and leaning them against the cabinet that holds my servers. The fabric on these panels is very nice, commercial grade fabric. It's perfectly smooth and looks great. The blue color is a nice soft blue and looks good. After I installed the panels, the sound difference was very noticeable. I could immediately notice the reduction in higher frequency sound reflections, and I was surprised at how effective the panels were. While I really like the panels, the one big problem I had with them is the odor. When I unpacked several of the panels, the smell filled the entire room with a very strong odor, like the chemical type odor of a new car smell, but ten times stronger--enough to give me a headache. It was so bad that I had to put all of the panels outside of my house. I had to let them air out 10 days before I was able to install them in my office, and even then the smell was noticeable for a week more. So while I do recommend these panels, if you purchase them, make sure you have a place outdoors where you can safely put them for at least 5-10 days to let the odors dissipate.

Excellent reduction in reflected sound, nice neutral gray fabric cover
I have been thinking about getting sound panels for my home office for a few years, but wasn't sure how well they would work and whether they would reduce the sound reflections in my office enough to allow me to record voice over audio for my work. It turns out that these panels are surprisingly effective--they have transformed my office, making it a great space for recording. One challenge of using these panels in my 11x16 office is that I don't have many large open wall spaces, so I had to get creative hanging the 2' x 4' panels on my walls. I did the best I could and was able to mount a total of 13 panels in my office--10 on the walls and 3 hanging from the ceiling. The fabric on these panels is very nice, commercial grade fabric. It's perfectly smooth and looks great. The gray color is nice and neutral and subdued. After I installed the panels, the sound difference was very noticeable. My office sounded very different--I could immediately tell that higher frequency sound reflections had disappeared. I was really surprised at how effective the panels were given that they are just panels that don't fully cover the walls. My primary concern is with mid and high frequency sounds, and these panels seem very effective at absorbing those sounds. Mounting them on drywall walls is very easy. Just attach the included metal clips to the wall using the included large thread screws, and then gently push the panel onto the spikes on the clips. It only takes a few minutes to mount each one. While I really like the panels, the one big problem I had with them is the odor. When I unpacked several of the panels, the smell filled the entire room with a very strong odor, like the chemical type odor of a new car smell, but ten times stronger--enough to give me a headache. Very effective at reducing sound reflections, Beautiful rich red fabric
I have a home office that until now has had bare walls and a porcelain tile floor. I didn't really notice the sound reflections until I tried doing some basic audio recordings. The recordings were terrible--I could hear the subtle sound reflections, and if I typed on my keyboard or used my mouse, those noises sounded terrible on the recording. I pretty much gave up on trying to record in my office and had to use my home video studio, which is a small bedroom with professional sound blankets on all of the walls. I've been meaning to try some DIY sound panels in my office, but I wanted something nice looking and just haven't had the time to bother with yet another DIY project. I had never worked with sound panels before, only sound blankets, so I didn't know how effective the panels would be. I thought that they might not be as effective as I would like, as they are only panels and are not completely covering the walls. I wanted to reduce sound reflections as much as possible for audio recording. But it turns out that they are surprisingly effective--they have transformed my office, making it a great space for recording. And speaking of covering the walls, I quickly realized that one challenge of using these panels in my office is that I have lots of 'sections' of walls that I would like to cover, and few of the wall surfaces in my office neatly accommodated the 2' x 4' panels. So I did the best I could and was able to mount a total of 13 panels in my office--10 on the walls and 3 hanging from the ceiling. After I installed the panels, the difference was amazing. My office sounded so different it was a bit disorienting at first. The first thing I noticed was that the clatter of my keyboard no longer reflected at all on the walls--the sound seemed to only come from straight from the keyboard--it was a bit spooky. I was really surprised at how effective the panels were given that they are just panels, and don't fully cover the walls. Given how effective they are in my office, I have also installed them in my video recording studio to replace two sound blankets. The sound blankets make the room look like a cave, or a padded cell, while the sound panels are much nicer looking and allow the room to actually look like an inhabitable room. Yet the panels seem to be very effective at reducing the sound reflections I need to minimize. My primary concern is with mid and high frequency sounds, and these panels seem very effective at that. Given that they are only a little over an inch thick, and typically mounted directly to the wall, I am assuming that they are less effective with low frequencies, so they are probably not ideal for use as a bass trap. Mounting them on drywall walls is very easy. Just attach the included metal clips to the wall using the included large thread screws, and then gently push the panel onto the spikes on the clips. It only takes a few minutes to mount each one. While the panels are great, and I'm very happy with them, the one big problem I had with them is the odor. When I first opened the box, the panels smelled like the spray glue used to hold the fabric on them. I didn't think much of it. But after I unpacked four of the panels, they filled the entire room with a very strong odor, like the chemical type odor of a new car smell, but ten times stronger--enough to give me a headache. It was so bad that I had to put all of the panels outside of my house. After 5 full days outside, the smell was tolerable enough that I could bring them into my sun room to get them out of the rain, but still too strong to bring into my house. After 10 days, I was able to install them in my office, and even then the smell was noticeable. So while I do recommend these panels, if you purchase them, make sure you have a place outdoors where you can safely put them for 5-10 days to let the odors dissipate.

        Instant improvement in the office
I used these in a conference room with thin walls. I screwed the hooks into the wall (actually really easy) and then the claw from the hook can connect anywhere on the back of the sound board (no lining up like a picture frame!). Super easy. No joke, it instantly made a difference and it was no longer possible to pick up each word when someone was talking loudly. Obviously doesn't eliminate all noise, but big difference. The panels are also simple and non-obtrusive.

Absorb sound and make a room quieter
These panels absorb sound and make a room quieter. They work. Just one panel will absorb some sound and make a room quieter. Each panel is 24” x 48” x 1⅛” thick, covered with cloth which is glued at its edge on the back side of the panel. The panels are light, just seven pounds, and easy to handle. I wanted to cut down the noise of vehicle traffic in my bedroom where the road is just thirty feet away. To try their effectiveness I simply leaned a panel against the wall and placed another panel on top of it — they stayed in place without fasteners. I did this with four panels leaning against the wall facing the road and its traffic noise. The reduction in road noise was immediately apparent. I barely heard vehicles as they passed by. Noise within the room — talking, radio, TV, was also reduced. It was as though I had hung a large blanket on one wall, which muffled the sound. Quiet to me is precious. The panels do have a musty odor. My wife disliked it and complained. I tolerated it, and I sprayed an air freshener around. The musty odor dissipated in two weeks. Instructions come with the panels for mounting them to a wall, along with three “Angled Impaling Clips” for each panel, each with three sheet rock screws. Two clips are to be used near the top of the panel and one at the center near the bottom. The clips are attached to the sheetrock with three screws each.

It looks great and helps wonderfully with the sound. We have a room in our church that use to be a garage. We have been using it for our fellowship hall like potlucks, party's and for our kids program. The sounds was terrible everything would bounce off the walls. We purchased these and installed and what a difference with the noise level and not to mention looks good too. see our photo... Very happy.

        Helps to quiet the playroom
I mounted these in the kids playroom which is a 12x14 basement room with low ceilings. They noticeably reduced the echo (probably about 20-30%). I honestly expected more of a reduction in echo but I realize that my ceiling is smooth (no "knockdown" or popcorn) so it's inherently subject to excessive echo. When I first opened the box the odor was terrible! However, after a few days in the basement it subsided and I don't notice it anymore. The panels are fairly lightweight, feel solid and are rigid (but you could probably squish them if you tried hard enough). The mount pierces the panel which keeps them in place. The installation was very easy and all of the hardware is included. There are three brackets that screw to the wall for each panel, two on top and one on bottom. Simply push the panels down onto the brackets and you're done.

        Great for the price
The panels are very stylish and affordable; however, the unfinished primer is a bit irritating on the skin. I wanted white panels, so I didn't paint them. They may perhaps need another coat of white in a year or so, but for now they look great as is. I plan to cover two of the smaller with fabric. The room they were used in was a very "hot" room with a lot of echo; We needed close to 15 total panels of this size and the 36 in. They are very stylish and made for a great accent wall!

        Calms the space
I purchased several panels of Owens Corning 24 in. x 48 in. paintable rectangle Acoustic Sound Absorbing Wall Panels (2-Pack). I am in the process of creating a dedicated 2 channel listening room. I needed some sound deadening on the wall to improve the acoustics of the environment. These panels can be purchased in different colors but I chose white paintable to match my wall since I already had some designer bass traps to help absorb sonic echos. They work very well, allowing a much better controlled presentation of the music. The price is reasonable and they were very fast and easy to install.

        Problem with echo solved
I moved into a new office and was having a lot of trouble hearing people when on the phone due to echos. I installed these acoustic sound absorbing panels and the problem was solved. They arrived undamaged and came with necessary hardware. It comes with two parts per panel but i only used one to allow pivoting. The most complicated part was trying to get the second panel aligned and level with the first as the system works by first attaching a sharp point to the wall and then impaling the panel on the hardware.

        Great Product
We added a 2x4 panel and (2) 2x2 panels in our laundry room, and it dramatically reduce the sound experienced with the spin cycle of our washer.
