The Mountaineer wood burning stove EXCELLENT!!!
We installed the Mountaineer Wood stove 2 weeks ago and it is our primary source of heat in a 2,000 sq.ft. 3 bedroom apartment in Maine. The apartment has a concrete floor,, and through the two winters prior to this one we were unable to get the temperature above 65 degrees, heated with electric heat, and spent over $600 per month in heating costs. This is the first time we have been able to walk around barefoot, wear T-shirts and be comfortable. In 8 days we burned $30 dollars in wood. The heater came with great instructions, was easy to install, and the manufacturer was easy to contact and informative when he had a question about clearances. The fan is a bit noisy (about like an exhaust fan in a bathroom) but we have not found a need to turn it on. We love the stove, and would highly recommend it. It is easy to load, and take up to an 18" log.

Good Stove for the $
We've heated with wood for 45 years and this stove heats well plus give a great view of the flames. Pros; stove gives off a lot of heat for the amount of wood used. (I didn't hook up the fan blower). Usually enough hot coals in the morning to get another fire going easily. Large glass door give a great view of the flames. Cons; small firebox. Baffle is blocked by the collar bolts from moving to the closed position and is useless. There is no way to regulate the air flow in the firebox. I made my own air flow regulator with sheet metal and magnets. Ash dump draw has a handle hole in the back, be carefull ashes don't spill out when using ash dump hole in the firebox.

OK Value...Heats Well.....Small firebox...Emits smoke and ash when adding fuel.
Installed this stove over a year ago in our new mountain cabin. We have a new 16 foot straight up 6 inch chimney flue Lights well when cold...heats up over 1800sf in about 3 hrs. However....some drawbacks.....1) Stove emits smoke and fine ash into room when refueling a smoldering fire. This forces us to add fuel frequently (every hour) while fire is present to prevent smoke. Not much fun at nite when trying to get some sleep 2) when new fuel lights off in closed stove, it belches smoke and ash into the room thru top air vents 3) fire box too small....not tall enough to develop a good bank of coals.... can only accept 1 layer of small split log fuel (10x18 inch). 4) No air intake control to adjust burn rate of fuel..... top mounted damper has little effect on burn rate. Our place is in mountains at 10K feet and although we have poor fuel (aspen and pine) we have to re fuel about every 1 1/2 hours. Note: We get the same smoke effects when room is well ventilated (open door). The Mountaineer is a nice looking, compact rural cabin stove but it requires a lot of work to keep it fueled. Unfortunately, we are looking to replace it!

Response from Vogelzang Product ExpertMay 7, 2015
We at Vogelzang would like to apologize for the drawbacks you have encountered with your Model VG650EL stove. Hopefully we can offer some helpful hints to allow you to enjoy your Mountaineer and keep it operating at optimal performance. When you open the stove door, a lot of dilution air must flow through the opening to keep the smoke inside; if the exhaust flow is restricted, smoke will roll out into the room. Back-draft can also happen if the chimney penetrates the warm part of your home below its highest level. While the firebox is a 23”x 14” and able to hold a up to a 22” log, the stove is designed to heat quickly and consistently up to 2,000 square feet. Also we do recommend burning good seasoned wood in order to get the best burn from your stove, especially since you are located at over 4,000 ft. If we can offer any help feel free to contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-750-2723. Vogelzang

mountaineer wood burning stove
the stove has no way to adjust or shut off the air supply to control the burn.does have a flue damper but you still cannot control air intake.needs a shaker grate to drop ashes into the drawer the way it is you have to shut the stove down and remove a plug in the base and scrape the ashes into it. it warms well but the blower is loud.
