The connection to the live wire is done by bending and wrapping the wire and then punching through with the teeth of the connector. My wire is 12-gauge. Maybe it is too thick for this product, which was designed for a cheaper wire, or the cold temperature made the wire extra stiff, but I was not successful at pinching and making contact with the wire. First, the wire can never lay nicely onto the place where it gets pinched--too thick and hard for the intended bent. With lots of effort, I got it in and squeezed. The teeth barely scratched the wire and got bent. After the third or fourth time of straightening them and trying again, I thought I had spent more than enough time and effort. Interestingly, the image and instructions show a different connector type. Maybe that one wasn't working, so they tried this connector and haven't updated the pictures yet. Well, it doesn't work either. Back to the drawing board... There are other brands, which use a cylindrical connecor where one half screws on top of the other. No bending of main wire required. They work much better.
