It works as well as I could have hoped for.
I ran into a boulder in the ground in front of my shed. Chipped away at it with feathers/wedges then I heard about Dexpan. The hardest part is drilling all the holes, but gave me an excuse to buy a rotary hammer. Mixed according to directions and poured into all the holes after blasting out with compressor. Cracks started forming after about 8 hours. By the next day it was broken up pretty well. Was able to get it well below grade without really breaking a sweat. Great alterative to a demolition hammer.

It is less expensive when purchased in boxes of 4 bags. I used 6 bags for a boulder roughly 7 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft applied in two applications. The 1.5-inch drill bits for rent at my Home Depot are only 16 inches long. Instructions recommend drilling 80 to 90% through the material you are breaking up. So, I had to demo my boulder in two steps. I gave the second set of holes an extra day after applying more water and got additional cracking. I still needed to jack hammer some, but it would have been impossible without this product.

    Boulder blocking installation of shed
Dexpan worked fantastic. Drilled 1.5" holes approximately 12" apart. It was not easy drilling, but i had 11 holes about 10" deep. The 11 lb bag only made enough to fill 9 holes but that was enough to remove the part of the boulder.

Removal of large boulder blocking entryway.
I was a victim of the Creek Fire and my home was recently rebuilt. I live in an area where there is lots of granite. The builders poured concrete over a portion of a granite boulder (what were they thinking?) at my front porch. The boulder was positioned directly in front of the entryway to my front porch. A hazard to trip on when people were visiting. Needless to say, it needed to be removed. One of my good neighbors was familiar with the product and had the bore and skill to put holes in it, about 8-10 inches deep. We mixed the product according to directions and poured it in the holes. Within about 2-3 hours it began working. After the 24 hour waiting period, the boulder was pretty much demolished and no damage to the cement of my front porch. It was an amazing product and very impressive. The boulder was broken down to the point that I did not need to jack hammer anything. It worked perfect! Attached are pictures of the demolished boulder. The large piece, still in the crater, was left in place to support plywood entry, until I can pour a new sidewalk. The other picture is of boulder pieces, from the same boulder.

          Sedona Red Rock
Works great! Drilled holes in an X to break a 48"X36"X18" piece of Sedona red rock into pieces -- initially smaller holes enlarged with successively larger bits to 1". Holes were ~6" apart. Before and after:

Used on large Granite boulders. I was on the top end of the recommended temperature and used a 3/4" hole rather than the recommended 1-1/4" to 1-1/2". Still broke perfectly. It took longer to form a fracture / crack than stated on the product. 72 hours rather than the 2-24 hours. Vertical and horizontal hole drillings to pop off the above ground exposed portion to eliminate a lawnmower hazard.

I had an 8 inch reinforced slab to break up. Drilled 1 inch holes 8 inches apart and followed the Dexpan instructions. It took about a day and a half to develop cracks between all the holes. Still needed some work with a small electric demo hammer to break out the rebar and fully separate all the blocks but it worked as promised to crack the concrete. I should have used a 1.5 in. bit but my drill would only take a 1 in. bit max. This isn’t going to do all the work for you, but it does make doing the job a lot easier with a lot less time on the hammer.

Dexpan is absolutely AMAZING in what it does !! We were installing a retaining wall at our home and came across unexpected bedrock buried behind the old, crooked wall. The bedrock went from two feet to eight feet wide over a distance of 20 feet, and rose to two feet thick at the far end. I found out about Dexpan, bought the required 1-1/2 inch rotary drill bit and went to work. Drilling the holes was the hardest part. The Dexpan worked phenomenally !!! We did the rock breaking in stages, working from the edges back. It took about four applications, using five buckets in total. I could never have removed so much rock so cheaply and easily any other way! Highly recommended. I've already enrolled two local contractors in using it in their work.

Concrete slab ended up being filled with quite large stones which did not get broken up. After using the Dexpan, 60% of the slab remained and needed to be chiseled after all. I can see the potential on a uniform concrete slab, but ultimately was a waste of time and money for my project.

The easiest way to bust stubborn old concrete - worth every penny!
I had to remove the top part of a set of 50 year old concrete steps. Tried a sledgehammer then a jackhammer both with much effort and no success. Finally found out about this stuff and ordered a bucket. Didn't have the recommended 1.5" bit so I drilled 1" holes a bit closer together than the recommended 10", about 30 total, over an area of about 12' sq. I got type I so I waited for a hot afternoon and poured in the mix as temps hit 80F. Was a bit disappointed to not see any results that day, but the next morning a spiderweb of fractures had appeared! After that I simply pried away the chunks with a pry bar and sledgehammer. Busting old concrete is hard work. This stuff makes it easy!

Works very well, a bit pricey.
I had a 4 1/2 foot bolder just under the surface of the lawn. There was no way to simply pop it out. I wasn't about to rent heavy equipment to remove it. I watched several Youtube videos on how to remove large rocks by hand. Most videos kept featuring this product. At almost $45 dollars for a bucket of this stuff, I though it was a bit pricey for the quantity. I drilled 8, 12-inch deep holes that were 1 1/2 inch wide with a masonry drill (each hole took 20mins to drill) . I mixed up the Dexpan as instructed and filled each hole. It took about 48 hrs to do its magic, but it was very effective. The Dexpan spilt the rock into more manageable chunks. Now I need to just fill the hole with dirt

This product did what it was meant to do. I use it to reveal my main water line underneath the slab. Which would have cost me $3,500 for a private contractor to do this job. Instead it did the job perfectly. And I was able to fix the water main line for less than $500. It took two days to do this job, but it gave me no problems and I felt like the private contractor. I receive the product in 2 days. And I finished the project in 3 days. These pictures will show the progress during the project. And reveal the final picture of the water main showing the pin-hole in the water main. Thanks to Home-Depot for allowing me to finish a product that was costing me hundreds of dollars in my water bill. However, if it wasn't for the video from Dexpan that showed me the use of this product. I would have been spending thousands of dollars in cost repair. Thank you Dexpan! Here are the pictures for day 1 to day 3.

I uswd this to break up a ledge of conglomerate. Drilled holes following the instructions, put in Dexpan, and waited a couple days. The photo shows the size of the cracks. Every day they get bigger, and weee a quarter inch by day 3. Made demolition much easier than with a jackhammer.

I purchased this product based on research for a non-explosive destruction agent to split rocks on my property. Preparation is key to having this product work. I used Dexpan for 23-50 degrees basedon the outside temperature being around 30 degrees at night and 55 during the day but the temperature of the rock would not get much over 50 degrees. Got to the steps which are outlined very well. Key is to used a 2 inch hammer drill to turn the 1 1/2 inch drill bit. Drill the holes dry and at least 80%-90% through the rock. Do not drill through the rock. Mix the Dexpan according to directions and pour into holes making sure not to over fill. The issue was that it may take more than 24 hours to split the rock completely which happened to me. This stuff is great does the job as advertised and is really neat. My guys thought I bumped my head but when the sawthe rock on Monday totally split; they were sold on it. Definitely worth the money to use.

Product suppose to work up to 5 C below zero. I applied it at temp. +8 C(day) and +4 C (night). Next three days was above 0 C. I applied water to holes as per instruction. Worked partially. For 24 holes only six were broken. After that freezing weather came and stopped all process. I was told wait to warmer (Spring) days. I will see then. Surely Dexpan 3 can work during Summer.

Product worked as described . I bought two buckets to break up a solid 100 year old concrete staircase. Only reason it didnt get 5 stars from me ,is on the second bucket it took close to a week to finally break it. I broke it in the winter in Washington (30-50 degrees) but I purchased the cold weather formula and it took its sweet time breaking it. But all in all this stuff is pretty amazing.

I just used this product on 3 slabs of concrete that were 24 across and 24 deep and put it in 1.12" holes that I drilled at about 12pm and by 5pm they started to crack by morning they had big time cracking and saved me having to use a sledge hammer to try and brake these up. Amazing stuff simply amazing. I have talked to 2 guys that do concrete for a living and both have never heard of this product. I wish there was a better way to get the word out. Thanks for saving my back Archer Co

I used Dexpan to break up some 18" x 18" concrete slabs that were cut out of a patio. The slabs were 3" to 4" thick. On the first slab, I drilled 1" diameter holes, about 3" deep. I drilled in steps, using Bosch Blue Granite drills. I used 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 1". I tried to avoid breaking through to the bottom of the slab. In the cases where I did, I simply pounded a short piece from a 1" wood dowel into the hole to make a new bottom. Then I mixed a little of the Dexpan with water, and troweled it into the holes. See the photo for the location of the holes. Cracks appeared by the next morning. After a couple days, the cracks were 1/4" wide. The longer you wait, the more Dexpan expands. If it doesn't appear to work at first, just wait another day or two. I found that for the slabs, the minimum hole size I could get away with was 3/4" diameter. Then it took 3-4 days for large cracks to appear. The slab was completely broken up. The hardest part is drilling holes in the concrete. Hammer drills cause massive vibration in your hands. This is not good for your health and can cause permanent hand damage. I'd suggest padding the hammer drill's side handle and the main handle with foam padding. The thicker the better.

18,000psi? I believe it. I just drilled the holes, mixed the Dexpan, and poured. That's all! Cracks formed and eventually I was able to get a bar sufficiently in between the chunks to separate them and move them. Cement porch is now gone. Hundreds of dollars and my back saved!

I had some steps I wanted to remove. After starting the removal I found out the steps had been poured 2 to 4 feet deep. A borrowed jack hammer did not do the job, and after a day of work I looked for a solution. I found Dexpan. I could only drill 1" holes but it did the job easily. It did take more than 24 hours. I did need to do the bottom steps a second time because I did not drill a correct pattern for the crack to form. The second try worked great. This is a lot easier than a jack hammer or a sledge.

I used this product to break a big granite boulder that was too close to my house. The hardest part is drilling the holes but once those are done the rest was easy. Just mix, pour, and wait...and wait. They say it activates in 12-24 hours. Maybe it was the weather but it took 2 days for the first batch to show cracks which continued to widen over the next couple of days, and 3 days for the second batch. But each time it worked as advertised. Good product!

I bought this product to try and break up a very thick layer of caliche in my front yard--I drilled holes about 4 inches apart and 10 inches deep, filled them with Dexpan slurry, and left everything for 24 hours. Admittedly, the application is probably not exactly what this product was designed for (a buried, consolidated rock layer, rather than a standalone boulder or concrete), but I didn't have any luck breaking up the caliche layer. The product definitely expanded vertically, but it didn't seem to expand horizontally. I tried again with a hole drilled in the side of my excavation, which gave some open space that the caliche could expand into, and that seemed to work a bit better. This isn't much help if I'm trying to break up the material at the bottom of an excavated area, however, which is ultimately what I hoped to use it for. This was a bit of an expensive experiment, and I would not recommend it for breaking up caliche. I did like that the expanded product is a powder, which is much easier to clean up and dispose of than a chunk of hardened material (which I expected).

Exceeded expectations. The 11 lb bucket was not enough to do the entire job; I bought the small bucket just to see if it would work. I used this on front steps, which are solid concrete with reinforced steel re-barb and netting. I did not use it exactly as instructed. I drilled 1 inch diameter holes and spaced them about every 8 inches; each hole was about 8 inches deep. The 11 lb bucket filled 38 holes (spilled a little). After 24 hours, there were a few very tiny cracks between the holes; the cracks became more numerous and larger each day I waited, after 1 week, the cracks were 1/4 - 1/2 inch wide and large chucks of concrete began to fall apart. See photo. I'm buying the 44 lb bag to do the rest.
