One function costly bad, three functions good.
I bought the Funai DV220FX4, a VCR/DVP combo box. It is much less expensive than other new VCRs (which are scarcely being manufactured now). On the carton it says “in-line recording.” That means it doesn’t have a tuner. Even though I have a little DTV box, which transmits digital signals to my TV, that is a tuner with only one coaxial input jack (from antenna or wall cable) and one coaxial output jack (to carry signal to the TV). In principle that output jack could be routed to the Funai VCR, with output from the VCR going to the TV. In that way one can watch a live program, and/or record that program (directly or via timed setting). But the Funai does NOT have a coaxial input jack; it has input jacks for the RCA-type yellow (video) and white (audio) cables. Therefore one has to find intermediate equipment that will 1) have an input jack for a coaxial cable, 2) appropriate internal wiring to transmit the signal, and 3) output jacks for yellow and white plugs on a cable that has yellow and white plugs at both ends. ‘Cable box’ is too vague a designation, a ‘converter box’ did not work, and it is not an ‘RF modulator.’ I could not find the appropriate equipment at eight retail stores. Online I located an ‘RF demodulator’ that had the requisite jacks. It cost $81 including shipping, which doubles the cost of the Funai combo. I have all the needed cables and connected it easily. The scheme did NOT work; the TV showed a flickering black-peppered white screen, accompanied by very loud static. I gave up and returned the Funai, etc.. The other 3 functions, play a VCR, play a DVD video and play a music CD all work well; if that’s all you want, the Funai is satisfactory.
