My wife and I would never be confused for great chefs. We have actually used the product only once. IMO it worked as advertised. Its preset choices for cooking meat are government recommendations and not, I think, the values many chefs use. Yet I imagine that with experience one will be able to determine the temps one wants to use and one can program a wider range of other temps in the memory if one wishes. The remote seems to start displaying only after a relatively high temp is reached. As others have noted the remote does not display the changing temp itself as does the base unit. For us this is no problem whatsoever since the remote would only serve to be a reminder to look at the base unit when the time is close. In its first use the prime rib we did was quite close to what we wanted it to be. Note that we did take it out when the thermometer reached 145 degrees, covered it with foil, and allowed it to sit and continue to cook for about another 20 minutes on the counter top. No idea if the thermometer is going to be durable.
