Safety alternative to Dry Erase Boards.
All Chalkboards are safety alternatives to dry erase boards because dry erase markers like Expo markers have extremely bad dangerous chemicals and fumes in them that are extremely bad for the environment and extremely bad for little kids whereas chalkboard chalks are entirely safe and non-toxic and eco-friendly especially dustless chalks which are safety alternatives to dry erase markers like Expo markers and also make special jumbo chalks for children under 3 years old.

    Follow Directions and it's Great
Used this to paint some plywood that is being used as the top of a coffee table (made by two nightstands placed back-to-back). I followed the directions on the can very closely starting with surface prep, ambient temperature, drying time between coats and final preparation before use. Truly beautiful and functional chalkboard surface. A few days later, I used the leftover paint on a similar piece of wood. I followed all directions EXCEPT the ambient temperature. It was about 5 degrees below the specified range. Paint came out clumpy and did not work at all like the first round (when it was warmer). So, I definitely recommend following the label directions!

This year, I made a Christmas tree craft project for 100 children at a local preschool. To avoid the inevitable accidents, I wanted to allow the children to decorate the tree with chalk rather than use paint. I had not used this product before and was not sure what to expect. I selected the green paint for the proper tree color. The color turned out to be a deep and gorgeous green, which was just what I was hoping for. I was applying the paint to tempered hardboard from Home Depot, so I primed the surface as recommended. The creamy consistency of the paint went on easily and smoothly with either a brush or a small nap roller for smooth surfaces. As the paint was applied, there were minor brush and roller marks on the surface, but when it dried the surface was completely smooth. A second coat was not required. After it dried, I tested the painted surface with chalk and it worked perfectly and erased completely. I could not ask anything more from the product. The product was not in stock at my local store in rural Arizona, but I ordered it online and it was delivered in a few days to my local store. I make projects as gifts for others so quality and durability are very important to me, especially when the project is for children. I am thrilled with how my project turned out.

If you want to make a functional chalkboard--Don't use this paint -- It looks great, however, Chalk markers don't completely come off (Making it unusable again and regular chalk scratches the paint --leaving you again with words on your board! I have used both black and school house green with same results.

      Response from Rust-OleumSupportOct 23, 2019
That's odd! Each can of Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint has a recommended coverage of 95-120 square feet per a single coat. It is essential that enough product is being applied to the surface and that the surface is being properly prepped. To ensure ease of erasability, the surface must be conditioned before use and after every time the surface is washed. We recommend waiting at least 3 days before writing on the surface and 7 days before wiping the surface down.

        Affordable Kitchen Countertop Redo
I used this paint on laminate kitchen countertops that were original to the home (1993). They counter tops were not in great condition. I degreased them, lightly sanded them with 220 grit, then 400, then 600 to make sure i did not leave any harsh sanding marks. I cleaned the countertops off, let them dry and then applied 4 coats of the chalkboard paint over a 3 days period of time, allowing for each coat to throughly dry before applying the next coat. if you apply too soon or overwork the paint it will come right back off, dry with an uneven surface and look like a mess. Patience is truly the key with this paint. when all of the coats dried I applied a food safe matte wax and buffed it out. I think it looks amazing! I wish I could show you the before pictures!

Applied 2 coats with a foam roller, then "seasoned" the chalkboard with white chalk and erased with lightly dampened towel. Did this 4'x6' chalkboard with a barn wood frame and it came out excellent. Highly recommend Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint!!

Believe it or not I used it for hardwood floor refinishing. I used this product on a other project and discovered the durability. I COULD NOT get it off floor or MY HANDS after it cured. Chalkpaint had to wear off my fingernails! (But black nail polish is in! Ha!) EXCELLENT PRODUCT! I sanded with $30 Home Depot sander, scraped with razor blade for additional smooth finish, blended brown with black to give woodgrain illusion AND best part is it dries in 20 minutes. I immediately applied ProFinish poly in semi gloss finish, waited 7 days to cure and applied 2nd coat of polyurethane. Amazing, durable, ecnomical alternative to oilbased stain!

This chalkboard paint went on well and achieved the stone look I was going for on the rough surface I applied it to. On the first coat, there were a number of holes to the beat wood. On the second it looked great. Being we are not using it as a chalkboard and wanted it to stand up to wear and tear better. I also coated it with a coat of polyurethane. This gave it the glossy polished rock look we were going for. The Chalkboard paint dried fast and cleaned up well.

This paint definitely serves its purpose. Is easy to apply. My only complaint is that it left brush strokes. Next time I'll either use a different brush or the spray chalkboard paint. Note: I did only use one coat, so 2 coats might help with the brush strokes.

We used this chalkboard paint for the backdrop of a pantry-turned-coffee bar. Coverage is good for a specialty paint. The finished look was enticing to a house full of 19-28 year olds. ;-) Picture of not-quite-finished coffee bar included.

Did the job just great. Had to customize a blackboard for a menu board requiring a specific size. Once applied it onto MDF cut to size, it compared to a pre-fab black chalk board on the shelf.

            great for roadside fruit stand
I made a sign out of 1/2 inch plywood for a roadside fruit stand. I first used oil based primer and then two coats of the chalkboard paint. it dried very quickly and after several uses, appears to be fairly durable. After each use I hose down the boards and most of the chalk is removed and the paint is unscathed!! only complaint is that the surface is a bit soft and needs occasional touch up.

            It did the trick
I removed outdated wall paper, and replaced it with two coats of this chalkboard paint. The surface is durable and has stood up to repeated use and cleaning with a light misting of water.

            Helpful Tips for You
Love this fun paint! Did exteriors of bedroom doors in hall. Don't have kids, just adults in the house, but we can leave each other notes! Or draw silly pictures. I can only imagine for children they can finally draw on the walls and not get in trouble! I would recommend from experience, however, the product does separate a lot, so have the paint people shake it for you or make sure and stir up from the bottom of the can and mix it well. Also, made the mistake of chalking the new paint with "dustless chalk" which messed up the surface so I had apply another coat of paint. Use old fashioned dusty chalk. The chalk-priming over the paint that Rustoleum recommends, not sure what the purpose is of that. We always clean our doors with a wet microfiber rag after drawing. Works great, and surface is clean and ready for next use. Lots of fun, the possibilities are endless! Enjoy and be a kid again!
