really happy with this mower
Excellent Honda motor...high quality hardware. Light wt and pushes ez. Did a decent job as shipped but I replaced the OEM blade with a universal gator blade. (Look for the one wth the 3/8 center hole and universal slot for the mounting pins). We've been terribly wet and I needed more "blow" out the discharge. The gator sits 1/2" higher in the deck and gives me a better cut height, keeps the dome cleaner, and blows much better. It turned a good mower into an awesome one. Would definately do this again...my expensive jd mower is now resting in the corner. This out powers it and cuts cleaner and is easier to trim with.

The Mower is a CUT ABOVE the competition!
I am 32 and have owned many mowers in my life. My previous mower, the one I just replaced, was a similar model to this new Honda powered Southland. The Southland has been designed very intelligently with a nod to keeping things simple and built with quality. Compared to my other mower, this one is far superior! Right out of the box, It took less than 5 minutes to get going. The handles fold up, screw into place with 2 bolts at the bottom, near the wheels, and 2 wingnut screws to anchor the push bar. I installed the ring that holds the ripcord and then added the oil and gas. It started on the 2nd pull! I was VERY impressed! I pointed it to my lawn and took the first pass. I noticed the lawn was cut very short. Knowing that these mowers have adjustable blades, I checked the height. It was on setting 1. 1 is the lowest (shortest) setting. I saw that the manual recommended #3 for optimal cutting. I settled on #2. Each lawn is different, so you may need to take a few passes to see what works best for you. I cut the lawn and rolled the mower to my driveway to let it rest before putting it back in my garage. 1 hour later I rolled it back. I let it rest on the driveway to see if it let off any fluids from the initial manufacturing. Nothing was leaking or dripping. This is a GREAT LAWN MOWER! In summary, This mower is a great value for what you get. The engine is powerful and rated perfectly for its overall size. The wheels are sturdy and designed well. The height of the pushbar is comfortable. It started right from the start. It did not take 20+ pulls to get the engine to fire up! I trust Honda Power and I hope you trust my assessment of this mower. Happy Mowing!

Pitiful
Had this mower four months and it already won't start. It tries to start then stops. You can't make any adjustments and the carb anymore. Guess I'll have to look into warranty fix.

Really nice inexpensive mower
Yes it is a basic mower. The wheels are small and "cheap" feeling and the deck and handle are pretty basic. But the Honda engine makes all the difference. It is quieter, more powerful and uses less gas than my previous low end mowers with Briggs and Stratton engines. It feels easier to use and nicer to stand behind. I dont know how long it will last, but if you are looking at a step up from basic this is a much better upgrade than "big wheels" on back.

a great push mower
An excellent engine with an adequate deck ...fairly lightweight too. Ultimately could use steel ball bearing wheels.

Very nice lawn mower.
Glad to have a Honda engine and the mower is well built. It says the engine speed is adjusted where it is suppose to be but seem like it could be set a little higher. For the most part it cuts great but tends to leave a few individual blades uncut on sparse limp grass. I knew I had to move the bolt to adjust the height but was expecting each hole to be threaded. It is a little tricky to get the loose locking nut into place. I don't intend to move it, so doesn't matter much to me.

An excellent, simple mower
I only have a small yard and this works just fine. The assembly was quick and easy, the engine (being a Honda), starts easy and runs exceptionally quiet. I am very glad I chose this mower.

honda mtr only good part
the mtr is raised off the deck about a 1" why? height adjustment done by removing wheels and rebolting in another hole haven't seen this in years. only 3 bolts holding mtr on must have ran out of bolts and washers. mtr runs great started right up thinking of putting it on a older deck and throwing out the new one!

Great Lil Push Mower!!
I wanted a small push mower with simple operation, not a cumbersome self-propelled. I reviewed several other push mowers, many of which had bad reviews, whereas, THIS mower had pretty good reviews. The reviews helped in my decision making, which is why I am writing this to help others as well. The mower came in a box & upon taking mower out, it was SIMPLE to unfold the handle and tighten up the attached mount wingnut screws. I filled up the oil with enclosed motor oil, put in gasoline, pulled the choke lever back.....and FIRST CRANK....MOTOR STARTED!!! The choke lever automatically goes back to normal after starting. Trimmed yard in a breeze with motor running nicely even through tall grass. The HONDA engine was a nice added bonus. I am VERY PLEASED with this Push Mower. Will no longer settle for the cheap brand sales that have given me so much trouble in past times. I recommend this mower whole heartedly!!! FIVE STARS!!!!!

Great little mower
First of all let me say that getting a push mower at this price point with a Honda engine was the reason I bought this mower. I was using a 13 year old MTD push mower with a 5.5 hp Honda engine at my Mom's house. However, I thought it was time for an upgrade. I have owned 2 Honda cars, my weed-eater is a Honda, pressure washer has a 160cc Honda engine, my generator has a Honda engine, recently bought a Honda self propelled mower from Home Depot (will soon type up a review) and used to own a MTD Pro rear wheel self propelled mower with a Honda 190cc engine and swivel front wheels. I wish I had not given this to my brother. lol So I believe in Honda's reliability. This is basic/no frills mower that gets the job done. It has started on the first pull every time and runs as smooth as silk. I have never seen a mower with this type of wheel adjustment before but to me that is irrelevant because once I set the wheel height, I do not change it. I mostly mulch and it does a fine job as is. One day I might upgrade to a better mulching blade like another reviewer did but at this time I am satisfied with the cut. The only cons I have for this mower is that I would prefer to have 8" wheels although it still pushes well with the 7" wheels and the mower is lightweight. I may upgrade to 8" wheels soon. The only other con I have at this time is I wish it had some padding or grip on the handlebars. It can get slick when sweating and mowing in the heat of the day. However, I am going to buy some black tennis racket tape or handlebar grip tape and this should take care of this minor issue. The mower is made in the USA! Happy mowing!

A good basic mower, don't need much else.
It does a a good job cutting the grass - what else do you want it to do? It is solidly built and you can assemble it in about twenty minutes (need sockets, ratchet and allen wrenches). The wheels are not readily adjustable but the wheels on my old lawn mower (with a lever) were not adjusted for 15 years. If you tilt the lawnmower on its side so the fill tube is vertical, it makes it easy to add the oil that they provide. It takes about 3/4 quart. I put gas in and on the first pull, it started. Depending on outside temperature, you may not need to use the choke. The best thing about this mower; my wife can start it without my help. She does some of areas where you don't bring the riding mower, while I trim with a weed whacker. It is quieter than any push mower I have ever owned. No complaints.

Starts good no current problems
Great lawn mower once problems were fixed. Lawn mower was delivered in box and left at my garage on its side. What little gas or oil was in it got into the air filter and would not start till I got a new one.

Quick delivery. Good product. Both recommended
Product works as expected. Recommended if you want a basic, reliable push mower and don't care for quick height adjustment.

Easy to operate.
Wow what a mower. My grass was a foot and a half high and this mower went through it without even slowing the motor. "Very Impressed". It also starts very easy and is quiet. Great mower.

Awesome engine.
No problems with the unit and to have the Honda engine in it at this price is amazing. The plastic grass guard on the back got cracked the first time I used it because it got stuck under the mower. Highly recommend this mower for a no frills product with excellent mower.

If you are tired of throwing out your arm every time you need to mow...
After going through 3 cheap walk behinds in 5 years, I decided to splurge on the Honda engine. Granted I've only mowed with this mower twice, but I can already tell this is going to be a wonderful mower. Was ready to mow out of the box in 15 minutes, and I am a girl :) Started on 2nd very easy pull right out of the box. Starts first pull everytime now, and that is with a gentle pull, not a rotater cuff ripping yank I look forward to updating this review after a year. I am sure the 5 starts will remain. the only (very tiny) complaint is the silly wheel adjustment that is noted elsewhere in reviews. I keep mine at a certain height and it works fine, but there are times when I like to raise it to the highest level if I have allowed my grass to get tall. It is a hassle to have to unscrew all four wheels to accomplish this. I am considering just keeping it at the highest level period to avoid it. I am not sure why the manufacturers made this decision. A quick lever would be much better.

returned
My husband selected this mower for its large engine. I was disappointed that the wheels were not easily adjustable. On the first use it ran roughly. Later it didn't want to start. We returned it to the store and they were good about it.

Quiet yet powerful
The Southland features a Honda engine that starts easily, runs quietly, and provides plenty of power. My previous lawnmower, a Craftsman with a Briggs & Stratton engine, was harder to start, louder, and used more gas. I haven't had it long enough to comment on long-term maintenance and durability, but I am very pleased with it right now.

Great mower at a great price
I have had this mower for a short time so far, but I have already used it multiple times. The engine has started on the first pull every time and runs effortlessly through the grass. I think my only complaint about the mower is the fact that it doesn't have the quick height adjustment feature, but I set it and forget it anyway so that wasn't a deal breaker. The Honda engine speaks for itself and the mower seems to be very sturdy.

Sufficient !
The Honda push mower is a good mower. There are better mowers, but this one is good for many types of homeowners. It remains to be seen to see if this mower requires high maintenance costs to keep it running and cutting well. Maintenance cost to maintain a mower can be very expensive. Sometimes it is better to just buy a new mower every 7 years or so !!!

High Quality, Economical Price
Nice quality! Its the very dependable engine on a Southland deck. I presume the deck is basically the same, with the swap of a few decals of the regular Honda model. Would buy it again in 30 yrs if this one ever dies.

Long Lawn Gone
My lawn is fairly small but includes inclines and nooks and crannies. We have had so much rain over the last month that the grass looked like a jungle. Cutting it with my shaky old mower was a chore. What a difference this mower made! The Honda engine started easily. I decided to use the mulching option and the machine did chop the clippings. The engine didn't stall even in very tall grass and the operation was smooth. The mower has a very sturdy feel and is easy to push whether on level ground or uneven yard. The design is streamlined and simple, which I like. The only drawback to the mower design is the wheel height adjustment. I have never seen a mower that required tools to remove and readjust the wheels to various mowing heights. Because I tend to leave my mower at one height, this isn't as big an issue for me, but for someone who must make frequent adjustments, the design could be very frustrating. I would have given this mower 5 stars overall if it weren't for the poor wheel adjustment design.

Great little mower
Out of the box it only required six bolts for assembly, and the oil was even included. Got the thing up and running in just a few minutes - started on the first pull! Easy to use, very powerful for it's size. I procrastinated getting a mower and it easily chomped through tall grass without leaving large strands of cut grass (aka - no raking after mowing!). It would be nice to adjust the cutting height without taking off all four wheels, but I think we'll just leave it at one height for eternity.

Good mower
I used to own a Yard Machine mower and I love it. This one is pretty good, too. Very easy to start, lighter in weight because it does not come with a bag, easy to navigate. Very good for small jobs. For under $200 the value is unbeatable.

Must remove bolts on each wheel everytime you want to adjust cutting height
Didn't use the unit. As soon as it arrived and I started reading the instructions, it said to set cutting height first. Then I noticed that if you want to change the cutting height, you have to remove the bolt on every wheel, then rebolt them in a different fixed hole to change height. My mower that just died was from 1998 and it had a lever adjustment.
