Smooth order, commercial-grade string trimmer.
While the directions that came with the Hitachi straight shaft trimmer covered a number of models and weren't particularly clear, anyone with a moderate amount of mechanical know-how could figure out the three attachments that were needed for the assembly. The directions were ambiguous about whether the collar was needed for the tap-and-go head attachment, but you must install the collar on the spindle prior to threading the head attachment in order to tighten the head. You'll need to insert a screwdriver in a hole on the chassis to tighten the head to the collar. I was pleased with how light yet solidly built the trimmer is. The engine is also quieter than any of the four previous string trimmers I've owned. The clutch is a nice safety feature, so you don't have to worry about a constantly spinning cutting head when you're not actively trimming.

Hitachi never lets me down
I use Hitachi power tools in my aluminum fabrication business, and have for years, I use them enough to wear them out. Hitachi tools are designed and engineered by people who actually seem to know what they are doing, a lot of tools are designed by people who never seemed to have never used a tool. This weed eater is the same, well designed and built, easy to use and lots of power. I expect it to last the rest of my life.

Do not buy!!
The trimmer worked fine and did its job while it worked. Had it less than a year and when I tried to start it up, gas came pouring out of the muffler. Called for warranty info and I was informed that the nearest place I could take it for warranty repair was North Carolina, I live in Virginia. They said I could send it back to them and be without a trimmer for weeks??? Very poor customer service !!!! Never will I buy a Hitachi product knowing this might happen.

Fast ship!
Ordered this based on the good reviews. Have had it only a couple of weeks, but it's nice. Only downside...it doesn't come with a shoulder strap. You need one if you're doing a lot of trimming

So far so good
I have only used my trimmer 5 times. It seems very well powered. Easy to use. Feels solid. The only gripe I have is that here in the U.S. they don't sell it with a shoulder strap.

Scary good!
After a retrofit of a minor plastic part my trimmer has performed flawlessly. Starts so easy while delivering all the power needed to cut through the tallest and toughest weeds. I've owned a number of trimmers but this will be my "forever" trimmer that I believe will be passed on to my son. If you buy it you will be delighted.

    Fantastic Product
I am very particular about my weed whackers, and this one is the best I have ever had. I have spent twice the amount or more for a fancy Stihl that, in my opinion, was terrible and nearly unusable. This one is relatively light, and very effective. I would recommend it.

    Great Product, needs adjustable shaft.
Very easy assembly, great instructions. Started on 3rd pull and has lots of power. 7 year warranty, hard to beat. Only thing was the shaft was just a bit too long for a 5' 7" male. Wish it had an adjustable shaft length somehow. I already own the Hitachi gas leaf blower and it is superb. Great company, with 7 year warranties.

    Line won't advance
I got the trimmer last week, put it together no problem. Mixed up my fuel and oil today, got it started (although the pictures in the book aren't very clear). Used it about 10 mn (this thing has so much power, it sounds like a little race car). Then my line broke, so went ahead and tapped it on the ground to extend the line. Nothing. Tapped again. Nothing, Tap. Tap. Tap. Nothing. So annoying. I shut it off and tried to unscrew the assembly to manually advance (otherwise how will I get the line out?) I can't get the assembly apart to do it manually. So that was a fun 10 mn. Now what? Do I get a new trimmer head for it? Is that broken? Was I supposed to do something else when I put it together that I missed?

Great for home-owner, very light, good for person with back/shoulder injury history
I am very familiar with the competitors model, the Echo models that Home Depot sells for $215-250. I like the Echo better, but this has some advantages! It has good ergonomic grips and wide, comfortable trigger. It is super light, very easy starting, with a comparably pleasant engine sound (Tanaka Purefire), enough power for 95 line and general lawn trimming. This is very maneuverable and easy on the back compared to longer or heavier trimmers. If you like simplicity and minimalist design, this is for you. Great for RV campers/tenants. Great for left-handed people. 7 year mfgr. warranty (consumer). Great deal, glad I bought it.

      best gas trimmer ever owned
I have owned 3 gas trimmers, this Hitachi 21cc engine blew away the 25cc and 30cc engines on the previous trimmers I've owned. I've had this trimmer for 3 years now. The only disappointed was that the gas line deteriorated after a year and a half, but once I got that replaced, it was good to go. the 2 previous trimmers would bog down in foot high grass and weeds sometimes taller, but this Hitachi just goes through them without any problems, like slicing through soft butter. no problems starting majority of the time, 2-3 pulls. This is light and easy to control. The balance to me is good. This is the best money I've spent on any of the gas powered yard tools I've purchased.

        Great Purchase
I was a little skeptical about buying a Hitachi weedeater because I had no idea they made them. However, I have owned a Hitachi drill for around 5 years and have had no problems what so ever with it. With a 7 year warranty it was worth a shot. The weedeater is lightweight and so easy to use that even my wife who is not mechanically inclined at all can use it with ease. Great prodcut.

        Hot Hitachi Trimmer
Assembly of this trimmer was very easy. At first, the trimmer was a little noisy and vibrated more than expected. By the 2nd use, the vibration had subsided. VERY powerful and does the job the first time and with ease. I would recommend this product !!

        21 CC STRAIGHT SHAFT TRIMMER
Everything was easy to put together and it works really well, I have been using it for about a month now. The trimmer line is thin and breaks down easy, but that is easy to fix next time I buy line. It is a good solid machine, I just wish it was a little less money.

        Great trimmer for the price.
Easy to start and powerful. No problem cutting thru heavy high grass. Clips it off and throws it out of the work area. I've paid less for a trimmer but got hard to start equipment that left me shakin'.

        Best trimmer I've owned.
Having used this 3 times now, I can honestly say this is the best I've owned. Each time I started the trimmer, it took only one pull - amazing! I'm still getting used to a straight shaft, but so far I'm becoming more comfortable with each use.

        Great, reasonably priced gas trimmer
This is one of the best purchases i've made off the internet in several years. As usual, the directions were maddening-more so for this product. The documentation was horribly written and contained assembley and useage instructions for several different models. While there was only a few things to assemble on this, it was horribly confusing. There's no reason for this whatever especially at a $200 price point. Once together and fueled i was amazed at the power and quality of this thing. Very, very solid and well made. It is on the heavy side and vibrates pretty good-if you're a female, you might want to consider an electric model. One small thing-the line feed doesn't work well. You'll have to manually pull line out. I've heard these complaints about other trimmers though. All things considered, a great product with a SEVEN year warranty.

Delivery was quick. Assembly was easy. Seems to work well but then it's only been used a few times since getting.

        Very Easy to Use
I've had a couple of two stroke gas powered trimmers in the past that were very difficult to start. Not this one! I just let it sit in the garage all winter (which I probably shouldn't have) and it started on the first pull. It is also powerful and easy to use. Highly recommend.

Really good trimmer, should come with a strap. I improvised one.
Nice long shaft, plenty of power, a strap would be nice. The on-off switch still catches me now & then,,, I was used to a switch that snapped back to "on".. Not a big item..Guess I' m a slow learner! The gas tank is just barely big enough for my use, lots of people will need a larger one.
