This Briggs & Stratton 33r877 19 hp engine on my lawn tractor blew its head gasket after 200 hours. I thought that was terrible until I read all the reports online of this engine blowing its head gasket after as little as 50 hours of service. Briggs & Stratton should be ashamed to continue selling this engine. It is certainly damaging their reputation. When I took the engine apart to replace the head gasket, I found that it had blown on the side of the piston next to the pushrod channel. From everything I've read, this is ALWAYS were it blows. If you look at the head bolt pattern, there is way too much space between the head bolts in that area compared to the rest of the head. This large head bolt gap is clearly the design flaw of this engine.

Bought this to replace a blown Kohler Courage engine in a Toro Z4200 zero turn mower. Bolted right in and all wiring matched right up. I didn't use self tapping bolts to bolt it to the mower but went with 1'1/2 long 5/16 bolts with washers and a lock washer instead. Took me 3 hours from start to finish of pulling old motor, a little clean up to the mounting area, and then putting the new motor in. Started right up for me on 2nd cranking. Mowed about 5 acres without an issue with the engine. Very happy with it so far. Was pleasantly surprised at how little noise it puts out with the muffler it comes with! Very happy customer so far. :)

The original Briggs & Stratton engine in my riding lawn mower only lasted 3 years. The 1st replacement only lasted 1 hour. The third engine has about 4 hours running time on it and it works well. It is not a good value for the price. The dealer was great in helping me get each replacement engine. This is the first negative response that I have ever given in my 73 years of life.

The product was packaged very well and the free shipping was a bonus. It was very easy to install, basically a drop in. I did have to install the old exhaust pipe and just kept the new muffler in case my old muffler goes bad. After filling it with oil and gasoline, and connecting the wiring it started up fine and runs very well.

Easy to replace

Arived very quickly and nicely protected in shipping material, installed on Toro 42" ZTR (after removing junk Toro motor), with very little alterations I had it installed in about 2.5hrs, started right up.

Failed at first start

Perfect replacement for my 20hp engine. Engine came packaged very well. It was pouring down rain when it was delivered and it sat in the rain for a few hours, but when I unpacked it I was pleasantly surprised to see that the engine was perfectly dry. Easy swap over and it started up immediately. I have used it for about 2 hours straight and it has performed flawlessly.

Excellent purchase. I bought this engine to replace the one on a six year old craftsman 46” tractor. The tractor frame, body and deck were still in excellent condition so I decided that a new engine would be a cost effective solution instead of buying a new tractor. I had the engine shipped to the store to get free shipping. It arrived well ahead of schedule. The box was in good condition and the engine had no visible damage. This engine is essentially an exact replacement for my original engine which was a B&S 33R877-0003 G1. However, there were some nice improvements with the new engine such as a fuel pump and a heavy duty rectifier. The actual installation on the tractor is very easy. Four self-tapping mounting bolts, fuel line, throttle linkage, four wires and it’s completed. In my application, the only item not directly reusable from the original tractor was the wire harness connector. The new engine came with a single connector that must fit some tractor, but not mine. So I cut off the connector and spliced the four wires to my tractor harness using solder and heat shrink tubing. The four wires are carb solenoid, kill wire, charging system and headlights. After filling the crankcase with oil and fueling, the engine started right up after no more than four revs. It was smooth running and sounded great. I let it run for about 10 minutes while I checked the charging system and all the safety shutoff controls. All was fine and it has been running great since. This is a nice engine at a reasonable price. Home Depot provided reliable service and fast delivery.

Bolted up easily and started right up. Replaced motor on John Deere LA110.

The engine was easy to install. It started after the third try, once it got gas into the carburetor and ran very well afterwards. One word of advice is to tap the 4 engine mount bolt holes to make for an easier install.

This will be the 3nd, exact same engine, that i need to put back into my riding mower. These engines do not go any longer that 245-260 running hours before they break down. I have a Craftsman 42 inch cut. The engine works fine, but anything past 245 hours the head gaskets go the engine is done. I have an hour meter and I have kept track of each engine I have replaced and the amount of hours it has upon it. I use it for my lawn only, no hauling or heavy type usage. It's a good engine, but does not last long. But, $547.00 is still cheaper than buying an entire new riding mower so I replace it .

perfect replacement for my first edition 42 inch Toro Timecutter. Much more power, quieter, smoother running. An excellent replacement. Just hook up and go.

Great motor super fast had to put wheelie bars on my tractor

Good value, quick ship, easy install, wiring matched-up. A good choice to re-power my MTD/ Toro LX426 lawn tractor. The only modification was a swap over to the OEM Toro muffler but the bolt pattern was identical. Too early to judge the long term durability of the engine. The original B&S 20 HP engine lasted 9 years before it destroyed itself by 'lunching' a connecting rod.

I haven't had the chance to put it under load yet, but it is installed and runs great. Having to do some minor alterations now to make the hood fit, I'm confident that it will be just fine. Replacing an older 2000 model 12.5 Briggs on a Murray 40 in. cut.

Everything was good, put this on a John Deer riding mower. It would be nice if the muffler was not installed and let you decide to use the original or the one that comes on the mower. I had to use the original muffler and broke one of the bolts taking it off. Other than that it was a great price and easy to install.
