Ryobi 16-inch battery operated push mower died after second use
Bought model #RY40140 online on March 27 and it was delivered to my house a few days later. Worked fine on the first use and really liked the mower. Was sadly disappointed upon second use. Mower stopped after a few minutes. Battery is fully charged and it was running, but it just stopped about 5 minutes in. Tried to return it to a local Home Depot but they would not take it and did not offer to repair it.

Since I already have three batteries that I use with my RYOBI weed whacker, chain saw, and leaf blower this was an excellent choice for me. The first time I used it on overgrown wet grass with the grass catcher, I had to empty it about 15 times per battery. When using on dry grass, I used the mulching insert and the clippings just disappeared into the grass! Battery lasted over 20 minutes. I now use it to trim (mulching) around yard trees and bushes before using my rider mower and it allows saving gas and wear on that mower. Bonus: it is easy enough for my wife to use, and she does! Rough ground could loosen grass catcher, until I added this bungee cord to help secure it. (see Image)

This is a fairly small lawn mower which was great for my front yard. My back yard was another story! I also purchased the weed eater and an extra battery, so I was able to charge one while I used one. They take a while to fully charge, and only last for about 30 minutes of mowing/use. This product would be better for a smaller yard, but it works pretty well so I can't complain. This product is lightweight and it was easy to set up myself.

    Get 'er done!
This mower is light weight and easy to maneuver. I have thick St. Augustine grass and the battery charge lasted approximately one hour. Perfect!

Best Lawn Mower for Our SoCal Lawn
(for the short, one paragraph review, look for the **** at the end of my review) Having a healthy, green, and easy to maintain 600 sq/ft lawn in Souther California during a drought summer is not easy, and many neighbors have opted to look away from grass lawns for that reason. However, with the right techniques, some research about grass and soil , a healthy amount of hard work , and the right tools like the Ryobi 16 in. 40 volt Lawn Mower, it wasn't just possible, it has been really rewarding! My mother's lawn here in the San Fernando Valley was Sod-Farm fresh back in the 90ʻs . Over the years, she would water and weed it as needed, but as of lately has been a burden to keep green as well as weed-free. She not only enjoys the pride of doing her own yard work well into her gold years, but also take joy in not using synthetic chemicals because any run-off would enter the storm drains. She also hated the smell, maintenance and noise of a gas-powered lawn mower and has been using a 14" push reel lawn mower. She used to be able to use it easily, but with her hip replacement a few years back, itʻs been a task sheʻs begrudgingly done about once a month. I offered to let her take the summer off from lawn work if I could get the grass to return to its dense green state in an environmentally friendly way. The folks at North Hollywood, CA Home Depot #6613 listened to my concerns and helped me find the right detaching tools, organic composted soil amendments, and even tips on how to identify weeds (there are about 5 species I had to remove). Finding the right seeds for re-seeding the lawn as well as a hose-attachment spray organic fertilizer was done in a few minutes too. Adjustable-arc sprinklers were easily to install and calibrate . But then the task of cutting the grass was a hurdle I wasn't too sure how to clear. Gas-powered mowers are fast and easy to use, but relatively louder than the push reel mowers. Reel mowers drop clippings left and right , and struggle on some of the thicker St. Augustine runners ; any stick thicker than a pencil jams the blades bringing the mower to a jarring stop. I had purchased a 10" Ryobi edger/trimmer that ran on their 18 V ONE+ system of Lithium-Ion batteries to help keep the walkway and planter edges neat, and I liked how I could use the same battery and charger with other power tools . I decided to see what battery-powered lawn mowers were on the market. I discovered the review of the Best Electric lawn mowers of 2015 here: http://electric-lawn-mowers-review.toptenreviews.com . I sincerely didn't mind deviating from the Ryobi brand if the need was warranted; they make chain saws, but Iʻm far too fond with the performance of my Husqvarna and Stihl saws Iʻve used for years. If there was a product right for our size lawn (600 sq/ft), that my mom could easily use whenever she wanted, I would consider it - regardless of brand. In the end, the Ryobi 16" won out. Itʻs slight smaller than its bigger brother, the 20 inch 40volt, but the maneuverability around circular and curved planting beds was a factor. I did recollect the reliability of the Ryobi tools I own and use, and when I learned they warrant their 40v lawn mowers for up to 5 years (if you register within 30 days of purchase), which did give me piece of mind. I did read other customersʻ reviews regarding battery life and performance in different heights of grass, but figured that wasnʻt an end-all flaw in any regards. I decided to buy it! I unopened the components I had previous purchased (battery & charger) and did some housework to pass the time while the battery charged. I had read previous estimates that the battery would take 2 hours to charge, so I played "The Avengers , Age of Ultron" while I kept busy. Right around the 1:40:00 mark, the charger light turned green, so I took the battery , grabbed the lawn mower and headed outside. *************************** short, one-paragraph review is below ********************************************* Battery slips in easily, "mulching" attachment comes out easily and bag snaps on effortlessly but is still snug and secure! I adjusted the height to the "4" mark which is ideal for our grass species and then literally with the press of a button and holding down the handle , the machine powered up and I went to work. The whir of the blades is remnisicent of the gas beasts but the loud sputter of the engine is long gone. The blades are nice and sharp out of the box, and the itʻs easy to see contrast of the clean cuts on the grass compared to the fringe-edged grass the reel mower produces. A simple release of the handle bar stops the machine, which allows for easy adjustments or quick and friendly conversations when my neighbors ask what kind of lawn mower Iʻm using. Two days ago, we trimmed the tree adjacent to this lawn, and many of its bone-dry branches peppered the lawn with bits of bark and wood from the larger boughs I had to chainsaw off. This 16" mower quickly and effortlessly picked up and shredded all those pieces easily as well. I saved the clippings from last weekʻs mowing with the reel mower and emptied out two and half bagfuls of clippings and other lawn debris from todayʻs yard work . Check out how much the Ryobi mower picked up! I did the entire 600 sq/ft lawn and the battery still had 2 green LEDs on. Iʻm very pleased with how this mower works! A quick dusting off with the rag, simple levers to fold the handle, and the mower stores upright to await next weekʻs mowing! Weʻre also looking into getting solar panels for the house to reduce dependence on the houseʻs electricity from fossil fuels, so a solar-powered out door tool like a lawn mower would be great! Yes, California is in a drought and observing water use and conservationist vital for every citizen. But by knowing how my water meter works and calculating water output for all our water uses - sanitation , cooking and landscaping , we know how to budget our water allotments accordingly. Even though we were still well within our Tierʻs allotment for household use, re-establishing the lawn used the most water, and as the grass gets mature and healthier we see the numbers reflecting we do indeed use less water. Knowing this Ryobi lawn mower helps vacuum up weed seeds is a blessing , making it easier for the species of grass and white clover we have to take over ( white clover is a nitrogen-fixing plant, i deliberately bought seeds to enrich the soil and the flowers keep the bees happy too ) . Amended soil helps with water and nutrient retention, calibrated sprinklers running before 6am for our allocated times and days keep water on the grass, not the sidewalk. Healthy lawn crowds out Spurge and Purlane and other undesirables. When it does rain, I know the grass roots help keep soil from entering the runoff system , in addition to no synthetic chemicals being added. Having this lawn mower keeps the job of keeping a healthy lawn from being a burden. From all the beneficial insects living in the soil , the birds who spend their mornings chirping and foraging among the grass blades to the larger raccoons and opossums who frequent our neighborhood and especially the mom who lives here, itʻs important for me to find a balance between maintaining a lifestyle our family is happy with and also being conscientious of long-term environmental impacts. Thanks to this Ryobi lawn mower, Iʻm moving in the right direction every time I use it!

The right tool for my yard!
I was skeptical of whether or not the battery and power would hold up, but this mower handled the job with ease and battery reserve to spare. Smooth push mower! Great battery life! Easy to assemble. I got the set and the interchangeable battery is wonderful!!

    Great Mowjoe!
Goodbye heavy, smelly, noisy, gas guzzling, polluter! Just right to mow my 250 sq.yd. lawn twice on a charge. This machine is light, quiet, mulches or not, and makes mowing a bit more enjoyable. It has very simple features and controls.

    Could be better...
I am coming from a corded 20" mower, which I loved, but wanted to try a cordless to see if it was faster, easier. I bought another cordless, but it weighed 100lbs - exhausting for maneuvering - even with self propelled. This one is SUPER light for turns and maneuvering around shrubs, etc. This one is 16" and means I have to make 25% more passes - the front end is about 13" and the rear is 16". Not a workhorse - battery drains for higher grass or good, thick St. Augustine in Texas. If you mow every 5-6 days, you're good, anything else - more work, battery runs out. Cuts big 1" chunky pieces, not a fine mulch - must bag if more than 6 days growth - extra work and trash bags. Does not cut St. Augustin crawlers - see pic. Battery charges fast, but drains fast - I had to buy an additional battery $$$$ to get through my front yard in one session. Good for tiny condo yard or a smallish yard with Bermuda grass or weedy grass - not for a good, healthy LAWN. It is light and you can go pretty fast, but I'm not happy with it overall. It's not very powerful, so you don't get a really clean cut lawn, just a passable looking result. I'm not gonna mow 5 times a month to make this a good mower...

    What a little miracle mower
I have been mowing lawns on my own for 20+ years. I'm a short gal and have used gas and electric corded mowers. I'm sick of them ALL. So I decided to be done with the gas and electric cords and try something new. I purchased the leaf blower with this so that I could have the charger and battery as well for the lawn mower-it was worth it because the other 2 components on their own were just as expensive. So I get the lawn mower home yesterday, and my grass was in such bad shape. It's May now and the very first time I've even begun to look at the lawn. No joke-it was at a minimum of 6 inches of outgrowth. This little bad boy cut threw it like a hot knife through butter. Make sure your battery is fully charged for a 1/2 acre lawn. I used the highest setting-and to date I have never seen a mower have such GREAT clearance for an overgrown lawn. What a solid product. Just amazing.

      Good for Small Yards.
I ended up having to buy this mower because the one with batteries was out of stock. I also purchased the blower and trimmer to get the batteries. Good news is I now have 2 chargers and 2 batteries. I have a pretty small lot, with maybe 0.1 acre of grass. The first time I used the mower, the grass was pretty long as I did not have a mower and the previous owner did not mow recently. This mow took over 3 battery charges to get through. The second time I mowed, a couple days later, the grass wasn't as long, but a bit damp. This mow took over 1 battery to get through as well. I was hoping to get the (tiny) yard mowed on a single charge, but that doesn't seem like it will happen. Perhaps bagging would be slightly more efficient? I am on the highest height of the mower, which is 2.75". I wish it at least went to 3". The mower is simple and light enough that my wife can use it to mow as well, which was a bonus going for electric. One complaint I have is that the quick-release knobs stick out a bit from the side on the handle, so it is a bit difficult to get close to the wall (or my neighbors picket fence).

      Excellent Mower
I was hoping Home Depot would give me a chance to review this Ryobi Mower. I actually got it for an unconventional use. I have an Avocado orchard and the leaves pile up - in some cases over 2 feet high. I use the mower to mulch the leaves. It has plenty of power to do this. It even will break up dead dry branches on the ground up to about an inch thick. When it does stall - rarely - getting it started again is real easy - no cords to pull. Also mulching leaves is really dusty - a regular mover would have issues with having to clean the air filter constantly. The only drawback using it this way is the batteries will only last about twenty minutes. Mowing the grass would use a lot less energy so this would not be a real good estimate of battery life if all you are doing is mowing the lawn. I have two batteries so I can go at it about 40 minutes at a time. I'm thinking of getting a couple extra batteries to increase the amount of time I can mulch leaves, but even if I don't I will eventually get through the 2 acres a little at a time. Love this machine!

Perfect for a smaller yard or urban garden!
We live in a 100 year old neighborhood in urban Portland, Oregon. Our yards are much smaller than those we once had in the suburbs. Our Ryobi cordless mower has been awesome- just perfect for our city lawn. Simply put, the Ryobi mower is cool! Out of the box it looks FUN, like a space age race car with beautiful lines and a great design. If you've previously used a typical 20-inch gas mower, you may initially be worried about the narrower cutting swath of the 15.5 inch blade (16 inch cutting area). If you have a smaller lawn like we do, it isn't really a problem. I mow our lawn front and back in less than 30 minutes. It’s a non-issue now that I never think about. The convenience of pulling the mower out and turning it on are wonderful compared to the days we had to purchase and fill gas, or later dig out extension cords when we had a traditional electric mower. We have several other Ryobi 40-volt power tools, so there's always a fresh battery available. It lasts the full duration of our job too which is nice. This Ryobi matches the power of our corded mower, handling every aspect of our lawn without a hitch. Honestly I expected less power but instead was pleased to see what a robust workhorse it actually is under that pretty race car exterior. Hey, I also love the fact this has a 3 year warranty. Really good choice for the smaller lawn.

      Easy, convenient, and cost-effective...
To start off, I'd like to disclose that I have only had my mower for a few months. Being it is so new, I could not - in all honestly - rate the product "Excellent" with the "Quality" tag and "Value" tag. I am comfortable in stating that the "Ease of Use" was / is in fact "Excellent" ... a simple push of a button and flip of a safety lever and the mower is off and running. I was also in agreement that the "Features" are "Excellent" in my opinion in that what I was looking for in a battery operated machine with ease and low costs was truly presented in the Ryobi 40-Volt model. Now, on to my "review"... I have a fairly small suburban lot size. In Florida, that pack the homes tightly together to accommodate all the demand. Therefore, I was okay with attempting to tackle the Saint Augustine thick ground cover with a battery operated machine. My yard - including front, sides, and back - is no more than 1/8 of an acre (an acre being slightly over 43,500 square feet). I am able to cut the front, both sides, and part of the back yard on one battery life, then swap it out for my spare to complete the back, then use it with my Ryobi edger and then swap it out to use in my Ryobi weed trimmer with still some battery life left over. I was truly amazed that the batteries lasted as long as they did. Again, my yard is rather small, but I do edge all my driveway, sidewalks, and landscaped areas ... then, trim with the string trimmer, the house edging, around power boxes, etc., and mailbox, et al. My next purchase will be the Ryobi blower so that I don't have to sweep up the driveway and sidewalks with a broom. I am pretty frugal; thus, did not want to spend unnecessary financial resources on gas, oil, and maintenance of my tools. I have had the experience of owning gas mowers and trimmers and edger devices ... and in the end, there is much to consider with these powerful alternatives to a battery powered device. For me and my particular yard, the Ryobi 40-Volt line is all that I need. The final test will be how long the batteries last and / or retain their charge. In Florida, it is rather hot in the garage; therefore, I store my 2 batteries after they are fully charged in my indoor laundry room. There they are cool until use the following weekend. I want to again lead with the reminder that my yard is not very big, but for double the size, I still feel that my Ryobi would handle the task with easy and low cost. I may choose to buy the 2 battery option though. Since I already had an edger and trimmer with a battery and charger, I chose not to buy to combined mower with 2 batteries and charger station. Again, a larger yard and I would have another battery on hand. Secondly, when using the mower without the bag attachment (see my pictures), it seemed the mower was not as efficient and easy to push (blocked air flow or circulation?). Once I decided to use the bag (the following weekend) I was much more happy with the ease and power of the machine. Knowing that my yard is the tough and thick Saint Augustine variety, my neighbor - who's family has a landscaping business - thought the battery powered mower would not be able to tackle the job ... I was optimistic, but honestly did not know if it would. The product has a 90 day return policy, so I took a chance and am satisfied. My neighbor, too, is quite amazed as its strength. In addition, with our lots so tightly designed, the quietness of all my Ryobi devices - especially the mower - is astounding. I could cut my lawn at 7:00am and would never be concerned that I was waking my neighbor. I tested this by having my wife advise me whether she could hear me cutting the grass ... her response: "I didn't know you had even started" ... she thought I was "off doing something else" as she did not hear either the mower or the other devices. A welcoming feature in a world that is becoming more and more filled with noise. I can proudly say that I do not disturb my neighbors when I am manicuring my property. Lastly, the mower is light. After use in the hot sun, I can simply pick up the machine by its handle and walk around with it with ease to place it in a tight spot in my garage. I could never attempt to do that with a gas powered mower. Furthermore, with the ease of swapping batteries from one device to the next and then the simplicity and lightness of the entire 40-Volt Ryobi product line, I may now be able to pawn off my lawn duties on my wife (wink). I will end my review stating that after only 2 months of ownership and use, I would recommend the Ryobi 40-Volt battery powered mower (and other devices) for manicuring a lawn nestled in a suburban neighborhood such as mine! Honesty, - D. the Ryobian

Way better than priming and starting an engine!
I have the mower and complimentary edger. I got battery and charger with the edger, so I ordered the mower without charger and battery on line since the store didn't carry it. I used the same battery to edge, then put it in the mower and mowed our yard on the same charge. My wife even likes it! She couldn't get our old gas mower started, let alone push it around our sloped yard. The mower is so light my wife can even mow and she just has to grab the handle to start it. No cords. One grab handle sets the mower height like shifting my hot rod! Super easy! Charge the battery when done and its ready to go next time, no delays! It folds up with quick release handles and I store in a little corner in the garage.

No one says what the 5 year warranty actually covers and mine just died.
2 months to repair it and no one can tell me what is or isn't actually covered, and they can send me a bill for up to $100 if they decide whatever it is is not under warranty. Nothing I hate worse than a shady company that isn't clear about what their warranty covers. Home Depot just said "Yeah, we don't know what it covers, you just have to pay and see if they charge you or not for the full repair, but you'll know in about 2 months. Last Ryobi product I buy!

          Do not waste your money
I got one full row mowed before it turned off. I thought the battery wasn't charged so I connected it. The charger showed green so it was fully charged. Tried again and got maybe 5 more feet and shut off again. I had to let it sit for a few minutes because it wouldn't restart. I tried one more time and again it shut off after only a few feet. It would take me 5 hours to mow my tiny yard at this rate. I took it back and will never buy another. And my grass was not long at all. It was normal length. Major waste of money.

            Easy and convenient
I've been using this model for about a year now and I love it. It was so nice this spring to pull it out, pop in a battery and go--no messing with oil, gas, etc. While it's not a self-propelled model, that hasn't made a difference for me. I'm a 150 lb woman with arthritis and I find that it's very maneuverable, even when I twisted my ankle I was able to push it around my yard with little trouble and it turns really easily. Mowing every 5-7 days and when the grass is dry, I do get a good 40 minutes of mowing time per battery charge even with the uneven and sloping terrain of my yard. I use the mulching function and it mulches well, even the small branches and twigs I've occasionally run over don't stop it. After a solid year of use, the only real wear and tear that is noticeable is the rubber on the handle--easily fixed with tape. I just purchased a second battery so I can mow my full lot without waiting for the battery to re-charge as that can take several hours. Love the mower--would love it more if they figured out how to put solar panels on the mower so the sun could keep it charged, but otherwise it's been a good product for me.

Not really junk if you know what's going on.
I inherited a 2017/2018 version of this mower, and was told it worked fine. My first attempt at using it, it didn't start no matter what I did with bar and button. That's crazy for a basically a twice used device. Battery tested fine with volt meter. Upon tear down, I noticed a few things. All the plastic is basic, and like a toy. The electronic components are solid. There was a good amount of grass jammed up in the deck. This did not attribute to my problem, but cleaning was a good idea. A few screws off and clean. No biggie. My problem was in the button compartment. The green button is not a button! It's really just a way to push a spring loaded & hooked lever downward, which in turn interlocks to an opposite shaped piece attached to the spring loaded bar with cable. When they hold hands, and you pull the bar, a plastic part (under the real button) attached to the first lever is what actually operates the real button and the motor started. All in all, my problem was only mechanical. The levers weren't shaking hands. Hope this helps others who might be afraid to open things up. It's a bit cumbersome to sandwich these sprung bits back into the housing, so attache the cable to the bar last. Again, the components are good and the motor should't get burnt out on a small lawn. Not for a long time. The price is what I would expect for the motor, voltage regulator, and button.

6 years and still running strong
after 6 years, my two 4h batteries (originally this mower came with 2 batteries) needed replacing. So, I decided to purchase the 21 Inch Ryobi power mower with a 6h battery. This newer design comes with a safety feature that requires the handles to be unfolded and fully extended before the mover will start. During the 2nd use, it stopped working because the handle was slightly off center. Long story short, This 16" mower does not have that issue. It's a simple, durable machine. It will fit a 5h battery in it as well. It's light weight and easy to store. I think 6 years before replacing my 2 4h batteries is good use. I also abuse this mower pretty hard. My 1/4 acre lot has fully grown trees all around it and I'm always running over sticks and twigs. I use my batteries for the mower, string trimmer, edger, leaf blower and hedge trimmer. For expanded/interchangeable use, I recommend two 5h batteries with at least one charger and the 4h battery for the Expand It add ons. This mower would be too small for anything over 1/3 and acre.

                  Needs a higher height adjustment.
I purchased this mower with the blower a couple of years ago. I’m happy with my purchase. However I only wish the mower had a higher setting on it. The height adjustment goes from 1 1/4” to 3 1/2”. I keep it set too 3 1/2” and that setting still cuts grass too low. Is there something that can be done too adjust the mower height. Maybe new wheels that are larger, just enough to lift the mower from ground? PLEASE HELP

                    PERFECT FOR ME
I have 2.5 acres, no I do not cut it with this mower but growing up I always help my Daddy cut the grass and I love to trim around the front of the house plus cut the area around my deck to the detached garage, maybe 1/4 acres in all so this is perfect for me and I use the grasscatcher plus bought an extra battery. It gives me the final touch to groom my yard as the yardman cuts the rest. I need to sharpen the blade or get another if possible

Love this mower, it's super easy to use, lightweight and efficient. I can easily cut the entire front yard on one charge and still have enough battery left to use the trimmer and leaf blower for clean up.

I knew that I was making compromises but I got what I expected. It is smaller and non-self propelled but that was I bought.

Other than being a bit underpowered, happy with it.Unfortunately the Ryobi edger/combo unit, EATS UP the 40 Volt battery-MUCH faster than the mower!
