I have an older building (1948). It has the double hung window sashes and use this type of spring wound balance mechanism. The replacements work well, BUT, my old units have a pound capacity stamped into them, and a cable will break, so need to replace the whole unit. I have to use a new 12 pound mechanism to replace the original 10 pound mechanism. The older units are stronger. I use a 10 pound mechanism to replace an 8 pound. I’ve been using these, one or two at a time, when I’ve had a vacancy and refurbish the apartment, finding a broken cable. None of the replaced units have failed, and the first one I replaced was in the mid-eighties, so good longevity. When I replace window screens I know I have 53 screens to buy, so that many double hung windows on this building.

I was amazed this was available and after ordering on my doorstep in 3 days! Works perfectly and I found it online from Home Depot after 2 glass companies told me they couldn't get it. Thank you Home Depot! Richard Griffin

This is a robust product that serves its purpose. It helps if you file off the burrs and pound down the sheet metal tabs with a screw driver so that the cable and window do not catch on these. If you order this you might want to have it delivered to your house instead of the store as the queue to pick up your part is long and they appear to have a lot of difficulty finding small packages.

Great fit and worked well once installed in my wood double hung dash. Good price given other online alternatives typically 2-3x price. Mike
