Actually purchased the Ebony color, but I couldn't find that product to review. I think this is a great product. I painted a brand new door with absolutely no issues or problems. The first coat went on beautifully, but I opted for a second coat just to make sure I was happy with the variations in the wood grain and knots. I did not have any drips or blotching. I made sure to follow the instructions and mixed the product well before starting, as I suspect the majority of complaints related to blotching are the result of poor mixture (just from reading other reviews of this product in whichever color). I used three coats on the exterior side of the door (2nd coat after about an hour with the third coat after 24 hours), but I'm not sure that was necessary - I just wanted to avoid bleaching in the future as much as possible. Great coverage. Soap and water clean up. No major fumes. Quick drying.

Thank you for reaching out, Sue! For the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain and Polyurethane in One, we do recommend applying at least 2 coats. Additional coats can be applied with one-hour dry time between coats. Please keep in mind that we do recommend applying in a test area first to ensure the desired results since the species of wood can affect the final color of the stain.

It is possible to obtain a smooth finish using our Varathane Stain and Polyurethane, although several coats are necessary; we recommend a minimum of 2-3 coats. Prior to applying the final coat, the surface should be lightly sanded using 220 grit sandpaper to ensure an ultra-smooth finish. Rustoleum

This stain worked great. It came out just as I expected. I used 3 coats to be sure that I got the coverage I was looking for. The image is an example of a project I used it for.

My wife has a problem with furniture.  She recently informed me that she would be purchasing a wine rack and paying an additional 100$ to have it stained.  I probably earned myself some negative points by the look I gave her.  It was disbelief coupled with disapproval, but to be fair, I was sort of surprised that she would spend that kind of money for something that we could do ourselves.  After a brief conversation I realized that the reason she was willing to spend the money is because she wanted to have the rack "look old."  Now that I could work with and after convincing her that I could complete the task and save us money, she agreed to let me give it a shot--with the added warning that if I messed it up she was going to be quite angry.  Thanks to this stain from Varathane, she is not angry with me.  A deliberately uneven coat is all it took to make the pine rack appear weathered.  It really came out fantastic, the stain was easy to work with and soaked quite well into the wood.  It did not have a noticeable odor and applied evenly.  I left it to dry overnight; however, I actually think it was ready to be pieced back together in a few hours.  The finish is exceptional and the blend of stain+poly in one product was a real timesaver.  I definitely don't need an additional protectant surface coat, so it was a once and done application. I like the color, I like the price, and I loved the product.  I would definitely use it again.

It's my first time staining cabinets and I decided to use this because of the reviews and the color. The stain absorbed well and has a good amount of gloss. In the end, the color looks amazing! I will likely be buying this again.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Stain and Polyurethane. Since our Kona color is a dark shade, multiple coats may be necessary depending on the species of wood. There are many benefits to using a water-based stain and polyurethane, such as lower VOCs (volatile organic compounds), soap and water cleanup, and faster recoating (2 hours). Rustoleum

Difficult to apply without leaving streaks, splotches and runs. It does leave a decent finish if you take your time and are very careful. I used it to darken some chairs that I had stained a dark walnut color, but brushing as per directions was hard to keep even and streak free. I ended up rubbing several coats on with a cloth. I am pretty experienced at finishing and I would recommend most people would be better off applying stain and poly separately.

Thank you for your feedback! For the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain and Polyurethane, we recommend applying with a high quality synthetic bristle brush in the direction of the grain until a uniform film has been achieved. It is also essential that the product be applied to a bare wood surface and that any previous stain or coating is removed from the surface. Rustoleum
