A:  There are only a few issues with cast iron cookware: It must be properly seasoned. The cooking surface must be coated with cooking oil and then heated for a time before the first use. Many cast iron cooking implements come preseasoned. It can crack or shatter if cooled too quickly. Don't plunge a hot cast iron object into cold water. Cast iron will rust. Make sure it is dried thoroughly before putting away. A well-seasoned cast iron implement does not even need to be washed with soap and water, only wiped out. Washing with soap and water may cause it to require reseasoning! Other than those issues it is virtually indestructible. In fact, the older it is and the more it is used the more non-stick the cooking surface becomes.
