Q:Can this be use to prime my original 1959 wood windows. Looks like the previous owner painted them a couple of times and the paint is starting to crack and peel a little. Could I use this or would I have to peel off the cracked parts? Please help!

Answer This Question
A: We're here to help! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer can be applied to bare and previously painted wood, anything loose would need to be removed from the surface prior to painting. This primer will not bind down any loose or peeling paint.

Q:Can I apply this primer to redwood siding that has 20 year old solid body stain on it? Would you use a stain primer instead?
by|Apr 3, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, George! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer can be applied over the solid stain, provided the stain is in good, sound condition. Any loose stain must be removed prior to priming. If you have areas with bare redwood where the stain was peeled or removed, we would recommend priming with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer instead. This will prevent any tannin bleed from the wood.

Q:Can this be used over shellac painted wood?
by|Apr 2, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Happy to clear things up! Since shellac finishes tend to contain wax, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer will not properly adhere to it. If wanting to paint or prime over shellac, you can use Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Universal Sanding Sealer over the shellac and make it a paintable surface.

Answer This Question
A: Happy to clear things up, Amie! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer will cover stain after treating the surface, this primer will not kill or eliminate mold on the surface. If wanting to eliminate mold on a non-porous surface while priming, you would want to use Rust-Oleum Zinsser Mold Killing Primer.
