Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Joey! For the best results, we recommend avoiding spraying Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer in direct sunlight. This can cause dry spray on the surface. Working in a shaded or covered area is ideal on sunny days.

Q:I sanded and primed my old bathroom cabinet yesterday. Today the Zinsser Shield primer isn’t dry. It feels slightly tacky and I can scratch it with my finger nail. Will it dry or do I need to try and sand it all off and start over with a different primer?

Answer This Question
A: That's not what we expect to hear, Pat! The listed dry time of Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer will be affected by cooler temperatures, higher humidity, or heavier applications. Please keep in mind, this primer will not reach full hardness until after 7 days in ideal conditions, and we recommend avoiding scratching or abrading the primer before that point. If the primer does not feel like it is drying more, please give us a call at (888) 855-1774 for further assistance.

Q:Can I use this on exterior ceramic tile?
by|Nov 6, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Hi Jenn, our Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer adheres well to ceramic tile, and may be used for interior or exterior applications. Keep in mind that this primer is not recommended for use on floors, so if the tile is on a floor, we would not recommend this primer for that surface. We currently do not offer a primer or coating for exterior tile flooring. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:This says it is tintable, what kind of colors can it be tinted to

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer may be tinted towards off-white and pastel shades by adding no more than 2 oz. of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting the primer towards the color of the topcoat will improve the hiding power of the topcoat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:I’ve applied 3 coats of this primer on Hardie vertical siding, wood trim and a new metal door. Will a water based paint adhere to all three surfaces? I’ve been told that it will eventually peel off of the oil based. We didn’t want to use oil based paint.
