Q:Can i use this in chimney to vent hot water heater?

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, it is designed for that purpose. First you might want to check with you local code enforcement people. The local AHJ may want dual wall such as B-Vent instead of single wall liner. I have 2 units, one was ok'd with just the liner in a old oil burner chimney, the other had to be B-Vent because it went thru a ceiling and a roof. Remember to expand the pipe before you haul it to the roof, much easier to stretch the pipe on the ground.

A:  I am sorry for the delay as you asked this question months ago but it just got to me today. Thus I will assume you already got the answer. However if you have not and for the benefit of others let me answer your question. I almost certain the answer is no. When a product has been designed to be direct vented it cannot go into a chimney. But the question is really one for Empire as it is there engineers who develop the venting prodigal. If there unit was able to be vented via natural draft into a chimney it would be outlined in there manual.

A:  Yes it needs to be stretched. You will need 2 people and go slowly. This is very soft aluminum.

Q:Can this be used on natural gas furnace

              Answer This Question

A:  Typically aluminum is used on gas and stainless steel is used on oil; due to the higher exhaust temperature and the corrosive nature of oil exhaust. However every appliance has different venting requirements that will be outlined in the installation manual and each state has different codes regulating venting. Both must be adhered to for safe dependable operation. Thus I would consult the installation manual for the appliance being considered as well as the code enforcement official or a licensed trade professional, in your area, before making any decision on product selection or installation.

A:  Follow stove recommendations It’s only aluminum and may not take the higher temps

                by|May 26, 2022

A:  This chimney liner is aluminum. It is not suitable for a pellet stove. For that you would need stainless and possibly an insulated sock to go over the liner, in order to make sure the flue gas stays warm and buoyant and does not condense.

Q:Is there a adapter to transition to B vent?

                  Answer This Question

A:  "B Vent" is a venting pipe standard that manufactures must comply to but it is not the same pipe and attachment system across all manufacturers. Thus you would source the transition fitting to go from B Vent to smoke pipe. Or put differently from B Vent to this liner from the manufacturer of the B Vent. With say soldered copper fittings you can buy them from a number of different manufacturers and use them on the same system. With B vent and also All Fuel chimney you need to stay within the same manufacturer and series. Different brands and different series will not necessarily work with each other. I have worked on jobs where you want to add to existing B vent systems and the same material is not available. So you end up replacing rather than adding. Fortunately B Vent is not to expensive but All Fuel material is.

                      Answer This Question

A:  Aluminum chimney liners typically are used on gas appliances like gas water heaters. Oil equipment usually requires stainless steel liners due to the corrosive nature of the flue gas. Appliances that burn wood typically use stainless steel but with the addition of a fire proof insulating sock to make sure the flue gas does not cool down when rising in the chimney. Liners are sized based on the value, in BTU's they are venting and the height of the chimney. I usually get the BTU's off the rating plate found on the appliance, measure the height and then call Z flex at 1 800 654 5600 and ask them to confirm using there sizing chart. This way I am sure I will have good combustion, as you don;t want the liner to big or two small. And when venting multiple appliances into the same liner you need to make sure you create draft no matter which appliance or combination of appliances is working.

                        Answer This Question

A:  The simple answer is, no they are not typically stocked in the Home Depot stores. In fact most companies that sell plumbing and heating equipment don't stock them for the simple reason that there are just to many styles and sizes. As equipment has become more efficient exhaust temperatures have gone down because the equipment extracts more of the heat. The cooler exhaust is less buoyant. So one of the major reasons why you line the chimney is to reduce its size so that you create draft faster. The cool chimney needs to heat up before the natural draft process starts. The chimney liners need to be sized appropriately depending on the size of the chimney, number of pieces of equipment venting into it, type of fuel being utilized, etc. As a result there are many different chimney liners available. The chimney liner is made to slip down the chimney from above as single piece. The chimney then becomes a fire proof chase and the appliance vents through the liner. In most applications you would not be able to snap pipe together and lower down the chimney to act as a liner. I hope this helps and if you have further questions you can give me a call. A:  If there is asbestos present I don’t think you are allowed to touch it unless you are certified in its mitigation. So if that is the case I would suggest you call a professional to discuss its removal. However my intuition tells me that may be a typo and you may have been referring to Metalbestos which is a brand name for type of all fuel chimney. In which case I am confused as to why you would be using a liner. So please feel free to give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301
