Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! One gallon of Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR Acrylic Stain Remover has a recommended coverage of 150 square feet. Please keep in mind, this will be dependent on the coating type, number of layers, surface porosity and method of application. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Thanks for your patience and we apologize for the delay! We wanted to look into this further first. While typically we recommend rising surrounding surfaces and vegetation before and after applying Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR, we don't recommend using this product if there is a risk of ingestion. It will be too difficult to ensure the product is fully rinsed away from the dirt. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  Answers to those questions might be found at one of these link for the product: https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/af/aff3dfb7-c75b-43fe-a11a-921ab32771a2.pdf and https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/a0/a0cddb32-6142-4d05-8a29-059a11cb9826.pdf Then after reading this (link below), you might want to reconsider... not sure if adequate flushing of stripper chemical will be enough... maybe best to play it safe to be honest ... I flushed pretty vigorously and never had issues with my lawn and plant... pets are probably different ;) https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/alkalis/

      Answer This Question

A:  Good question! You will need to pre-rinse the grass, plants, and shrubs surrounding the wood structure to be stripped, and then cover foliage to protect it from exposure to the Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR. You'll also need to mask off the siding and cover all wood surfaces not intended to be stripped. Cover any exposed aluminum surfaces (siding and flashing) to prevent corrosion as well. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Q:I don't own a power washer. Will the process work just as well using a garden hose?

        Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out, Red! If pressure washing cannot be employed with Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR, you can vigorously scrub the surface with a stiff, synthetic, short-bristle broom, or brush for several minutes using moderate pressure. After brushing, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose, using the highest pressure nozzle setting available. On a vertical surface, continually rinse stripped areas to avoid streaking. Rinse any wood fibers off the surrounding surfaces immediately. When dry, the surface should appear clean, bright and free of previous coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  I used a pressure washer first then applied this. Still did not remove solid stain.

          by|Apr 21, 2020

A:  I'm sure it'll work with some scrubbing and a garden hose... but honestly, if you want to get the best result... borrow/rent/use a pressure washer (and not too close to wood as to tear up wood fiber... just enough to get the old acrylric off).

A:  We can help you, Marcus. As long as all surrounding surfaces are throughly rinsed immediately after application, Rust-Oleum Wolman Deckstrip-ASR will not harm the surrounding areas. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  It will affect any acrylic paint nearby so be sure to cover up things you do not want affected... If you are uncertain, do a test (touch some ASR to the paint and see if it evenutally softens... if so, I'd be careful and cover)

A:  If your deck is "peeling".. it's most likely acrylic... Acrylic usually stays on the surface, can peel and stays slightly pliable/gummy... This stripper works well... spray on, let it sit 5-10 min., and pressure wash off... Be sure to pre-treat the over-spray area with tons of water, and repeat with more water after rinsing to further dilute... never had a nearby shrub or grass go bad.

A:  If you have acrylic stain/paint on your deck, it should be obvious... tiny specks missing.flaking... sometime it even peels off like latex pain on a house... The old stain I removed was an acylic stain made by Behr (used it many times until they changed the chemical makeup from Oil-based to Acrylic-based... worse decision I even made in applying stain)... This Wolman ASR took it all off but with a little with effort and diligence on your part.

A:  Yes, use a side grinder/sander and remove the stain by hand. Definitely works.

A:  No, This product did not even loosen up my stain. I applied it and used a pressure washer and it did no more than when I used the pressure washer alone. I eventually had to belt sand the entire deck.

A:  Yes. A bit of advise when using this product. Cover and mask any and everything that you don't want this to get it on. The old stain will become a goo and will stick to everything and will dry hard. I found this out when power washing it off. Do cover plants.

A:  You've come to the right place for help! Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR Acrylic Stain Remover is intended for use with acrylic-based coatings only. Instead, Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip Stain and Finish Remover is a better choice for your application since it can be used with oil-based semi-transparent stains. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-5-l-DeckStrip-Stain-and-Finish-Remover-Bonus-Size-Case-of-4-14446/204744695 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  My decks had multiple layers of solid-color, semi-transparent finishes. This product is very effective. I applied it liberally and let it set 15 to 20 minutes. Washing it off with just a hose will not work. You need a substantial pressure washer. You may need to then touch-up some stubborn areas with a second application. I've tried all deck strippers in past 30 years and this worked the best.

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Jomaco. Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip ASR is an exterior wood stripper. We don't recommend using indoors because it will very difficult to fully rinse the product from the surface. We need to know more about your application to make the best recommendation for you.
