Q:I'm moving to a new home. I'm leaving a house with a 3-prong dryer outlet. I'm moving to a home with a 4- prong outlet. Do I change the outlet or the plug. If plug where do I connect the wires inside the dryer? If the plug, which wires (white, black, copper) to the wires?

A:  Hello, we would only recommend using the cord that came with your Appliance for safety reasons. If the use and care guide for your Appliance states differently than your unit has been tested with more than one cord. We hope this information helps.

A:  Buy a 4-wire cord with plug; the change out is easy to do. There are instruction with it, but you can get really clear explanations and videos by just going to google and asking, "changing dryer with 3-wire plug for a 4-wire outlet." Changing the outlet is a big job because it means running a new wire to the main box, and the only reason to do that would be if you are doing extensive house rewiring anyway.

A:  NEMA doesn't have a 250V/4-wire 40A receptacle. They come in 15, 20, 30, 50 and 60A configurations. Likely using 50A receptacle ( that is what the blade/prong looks like) and a 40A breaker in the electrical panel.

Q:Can I get a straight on picture of this plug? Or a picture that shows what sort of plug this is? This side view of this is not very helpful, I cannot tell if the plugs are all straight or if one is curved slightly.

A:  I'm a licensed electrician and install these cords often. The red and black are the "hot" wires. The white is the neutral conductor (used for the clock and oven light bulb in most ranges# and the green wire is the ground. In a 4-wire range configuration, the neutral and ground must be kept separate. Whenever connecting a 4-wire range cord to any range, it is important to remove the bonding jumper at the terminal block that connects the neutral conductor to the frame of the range. Please note: If you have a wire to the range that only has 3 conductors, do NOT use a 4-wire range cord and 4-wire receptacle. Use a 3-wire range cord #and receptacle) which combines the neutral with the ground. Three-wire range circuits are not allowed to be installed for newer installations and are only acceptable for existing/older applications.
