Q:Is this motion sensor light weatherproof? In other words, can it be installed on a back corner of my house with no fear of rain making it quit working, or does it have to installed on a porch? Also, can it be activated if a small animal such as my cat walks by?

A: I would say yes, if they are not too high up and thus not within the range of detection desired--that is a problem I have too. It is also a problem if you want one regular spot and one of these units. For the unit to work, the light must be on, meaning the spot is on when the detection unit is engaged--meaning a light is already on.... Makes for a difficult selection of a place to use them......

A: We recommend the Indoor Motion Activated Light Control with Adjustable Off Times. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westek-Indoor-Motion-Activated-Light-Control-with-Adjustable-Off-Times-MLC6BC/203675445

A: sure, it works indoors and outdoors. It tells you to use a funnel shape light bulb, outdoor light, but I use the normal incandescent and it is OK. You can use it as a indoor ceiling light. If you really want, it can be used on the lamp also.

Q:I want to use it to turn off a walk-in closet light (LED), after a couple minutes without motion, if the family member forgets to turn it off via the wall switch. So to see how (energy) cost effective this might be, I need to know how much power it uses while just powered up and checking for motion.

A: It would be 1 watt so 24/7 about 50 cents a year.

A: Good idea. I think the power usage would depend on the wattage bulb you use. I use an LED lightbulb in mine.

A: When the OMLC5BC is on and checking for motion, it only uses 1 or 2 watts of power.

A: I agree it's not much, if it's just 1 or 2 watts, but SDG&E's current typical residential rates here in San Diego are $.27/KWh (Summer, baseline) and $.23/KWh (Winter, baseline). So if it's on 24/7 all year, that would 24*365 hours, which is 8,760 hours so at one watt that would be 8.76 KWh. So if the average rate is 25 cents per KWh, that's $2.19. If 2 watts, $4.38. Still quite low, but a bit more than the 50 cents someone estimated. Of course, we're paying much more than the average U.S. electric rate, which is more like 13.15 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). Thanks for the answers, everyone.

A: No. You can install it in a switched receptacle so if you are going to be in the area and don't want the light to come on but you need motion for the light to come on.

A: No, the switch must be in the on position in order for the motion detector/light to work.

A: Unfortunately, it can't be turned on and off like a regular light. The switch to the light has to always be engaged “on” for the motion to work, and can't be overridden.
