To answer your question about aluminum or fiberglass, please see the following answer.
The final step in selecting the right ladder is the choice of the proper material. Werner offers ladders made from fiberglass and aluminum. Each material has characteristics which make it best for certain applications, or one material may simply fit the personal preferences of the user. For example, potential contact with electrical wires, or a hostile environment such as exposure to certain chemicals or outdoor storage, should have a major impact upon the material selection.

A: 1) When a ladder is used for working on electrical equipment or circuits, the fiberglass has the benefit of being non-conductive and improves ones chances if they accidentally would touch an energized circuit or component.
2) I have worked on ladders in the course of employment since 1973. Wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. The first thing that comes to mind as per your question is that the aluminum ladders inevitably get damaged to the point of being unusable in a safe manner, whereas the fiberglass models seem to go on forever. While no one ever intends to drop any ladder, it does happen sometimes. When an aluminum ladders impacts something, it is likely to incur a dent or permanent bend. Just a small point of damage can render an aluminum extension ladder unable to extend or retract due to misalignment and friction. Aluminum stepladders easily become crooked and hence unstable. In my experience, the fiberglass models have an inherent resilience to damage that aluminum models cannot match.
