A: I'm not sure what it's made of, but I've had mine for two years now and it's still perfect. Whatever they coated the wood/whatever with is basically bullet proof. Great looking vanity and is wearing extremely well. You'll love it.

Q:Is the back open so the plumber can run his lines easily? Sometimes the plumber has to cut the shelves to run water lines and drains. Can the shelves be removed easily or adjusted?

A: There is an 8" X 8" square hole in the back panel centered behind cabinet. The back panel is thinner wood like plywood in case you need to trim out more. I did have to cut a U shape out of the shelf in order for plumbing to fit. Shelves are not removable. I even had to drill holes in the bottom as my water lines come through the floor.
