A: Sluggo, it is best to fertilizer rhododendrons when the flower buds swell in the early spring. They do not like heavy applications of fertilizer and should not be fertilized during the hottest time of year. Water once or twice a week or as the plant looks dry.

A: According to the Old Farmers Almanac - Fertilize azaleas and rhododendrons sparingly and only when flower buds swell in the early spring, even if they are fall bloomers. Heavy applications of fertilizer will burn the plants. Water plants during the summer if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week.
