A: Use the quikrete sand topping mix. Use this for 1/2" deep and set base over it.

A: Thanks for responding asap, I did see quikrete sand topping mix recommended at one point but the other 2 popped up more often in searches, guess I need to fine tune my searching ;- ). Ok, will exchange the Custonfloat for the Quik sand topping mix. I only get one shot at this and want to do it right. If you don't mind, just a follow up question (sorry to be so pestering about this, you've been very patient) - I also read that using Acrylic Fortifier added to the sand topping mix is beneficial for some reason, prevents shrinkage?, is that necessary or recommended? Many Thanks for your help and experience!

The mortar is what creates the foundation, if it does not expand you will not secure the base fully during installation. The foam itself would not be enough to create the foundation for the base.
