Q:Should we use brush to stain the wooden stairs or should we use clothes to wipe

Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help. We recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain using a brush or lint free rag, however, this stain can not be applied to floors or stairs without a floor finish. The wood stain will need to be top coated using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I would like to use this in a butchers block vanity top in the bathroom. Should I apply poly on top? Any other advice?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Ryan! For added protection and durability, we do recommend applying a polyurethane over Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain. Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is a great option for interior surfaces. Please keep in mind, this is not a waterproofing finish and at this time, we do not offer a waterproof finish for interior wood surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200241H/100169146 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Mary. When using Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain on exterior surfaces, it must be topcoated with a suitable spar or exterior-grade polyurethane. This stain must also be applied to bare wood. We also do not recommend this product for use on decks or on porches, as we do not offer a suitable topcoat for this type of use and foot-traffic. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

            Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain must be applied to bare wood in order for it to penetrate and dry properly. It will not do either on laminate surfaces. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Can you use a water based varathane polyurethane over your oil based blue stain for stairs

              Answer This Question

A:  Let's see if we can clear things up. While a Water-Based protective top coat can be applied to Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Premium Wood Stain, we do not recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane. The foot traffic will cause the finish to crack and peel. Instead, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish as it is specifically formulated for high traffic surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Floor-Polyurethane-2-Pack-230231/202057141 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14
