A:  Hi King. The VS 101 model skylight can be replaced with the present day model: VS C01 2004. If you prefer a fixed skylight, the model name is FS C01 2004. If you are considering a remote controlled skylight, there is the electrically operable VSE C01 2004 or the solar powered: VSS C01 2004. Any of these models will fit right where the old model currently resides. Be sure to order the proper VELUX flashing kit for your roof type/skylight model. That will ensure that your installation will have our 10 year No Leak Warranty!

A:  Curb-mounted skylights sit on top of a framed opening in the roof. Framing materials are fastened directly to the roof sheathing, then flashed (thin pieces of impervious material installed to prevent water entry around openings), before a curb-mounted skylight is fastened to the top of the curb. Deck-mounted skylights fasten directly to the roof sheathing, negating the necessity for a framed curb. Curb-mounted skylights are typically a more economic option for a new house, while deck-mounted skylights save money on existing houses by reducing installation labor. Additionally, deck-mounted skylights have a lower profile and may be more aesthetically appealing

A:  Curb mount skylights are mounted on a wooden frame (curb) that the installer builds onsite out of 2x lumber, around the rough opening cut into your roof deck. Curb mounted skylights are ideal for flat roofs up to a roof pitch of 60 degrees. Deck mount skylights are best for roofs with a pitch between 14 and 85 degrees. The deck mount skylight has the curb already integrated into the frame, and installs directly to the deck of the roof over the rough opening.

A:  Deck mounted means that it is installed directly on top of the roof decking; similar to the way a window is installed on wall sheathing. Curb mounted means there's built-up framing around the perimeter of the opening, or a curb, so the skylight is ultimately installed above the decking by a few inches and the roofing material wraps the curb and comes up to the skylight.

A:  Hi Mary. The direct replacement skylight to the VS-6 model in a fixed style skylight would be the FS C04 2004. If this is going onto a shingle style roof, you will need the flashing kit marked as: EDL C06 0000B. Having the proper skylight and flashing kit will give your installation a 10 year No Leak Warranty.

A:  If you call Velux,they will give you the new model that is closest to yours.I had the same problem and they crossed over 3 different skylights numbers for me .And the new ones are vinyl on the inside,and are exactly the same size as the old ones.

A:  Yes, a flashing kit is required for installation.

A:  Hi Cher. Yes this model skylight does require a flashing kit. VELUX manufactures a kit for a shingle roof, tile/thick shake roofing material as well as a kit for standing seam metal roofs. Please speak with your Millworks Desk associate for guidance in choosing the proper kit for your model skylight.

A:  That's a really interesting question for which I, not being a resident of California can not answer. However I can tell you that we have two of these units installed in our bonus room and are very pleased with their performance.

A:  If your skylight placement is within your reach. (ie..room over garage or attic space) There is a manually operable venetian blind available. To operate this blind, you will need to remove the insect screen from the skylight to make your adjustments. Once those are completed, replace the insect screen back into place. If this is not practical for you, we do have the solar powered shades with remote control available. If you have a factory installed room darkening solar powered shade, your skylight purchase as well as any labor costs to install the skylight is eligible for a 30% Federal Tax Credit.
