Answer This Question

A:  Yes, replace it. I would recommend changing all of them at 10 years even if they work ok. They are inexpensive.

A:  Yes! These are really cheap alarms. All of mine in my apartment eventually one by one went off randomly in the middle of the night and would not stop. We had to eventually remove them all because they would go off randomly. I am surprised yours even lasted that long.

    Answer This Question

A:  There are two types of Smoke Alarms: 1. Unscrew the alarm's mounting screws. If there are no electrical wires from it going up into the ceiling you have a Battery Operated Smoke Alarm. Any replacement of this type will work. Just install a new battery in the replacement and remount it on the ceiling. 2. If there are electrical wires (usually three) this type detector is connected to the home's 110volt power with a battery for power failures. Get some help with it. In many locations if you call your local fire department they will help you at no cost....some will even come out and fix or replace it.

A:  There isn't a recommendation per square foot for smoke detectors. The National Fire Protection Association recommends homes should have smoke alarms installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. So that means a 2 story, 3 bedroom house needs a minimum of five smoke alarms.
