A:  First I want to apologize for the delay in responding. You asked this question six months ago but it just arrived in my portal this morning. Normally the thumb screw on the flow check is closed. In this position the cylinder inside will get pulled open when the circulator runs. The thumb screw is only opened when the flow check either gets stuck shut. In the old days you could manually open them and get some convective heat. But the way we pipe systems today do not typically allow for that. Chris 978 651 3301

A:  I have experienced this same problem in my own home, but the system was much different. A flow check is a simple check valve. If enough pressure differential exists it will lift and there will be flow through a zone when it is not welcome. In my case the system worked fine for ten years then I started to get the symptom of un-requested heat. I changed the flow checks and it continued. In the end I never found the reason or what had changed to cause this. My solution was to add zone valves as positive stops. Now I only get flow when the system opens the zone valve. Water moves to pressure drop and for some reason I and you have a pressure drop that is significant enough to lift the flow check. I would speculate that this is due, in your case to the pump on the wood boiler and fact that wood systems are not closed loop.

      Q:Vertical vs horizontal

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes it does. This is a horizontal flow check for a hydronic heating system. If must be installed as you see it in the image; with the handle in the upright position. The unit has two input options. Either the bottom or the side. The one not used needs to be plugged. The output is always on the side. Please note this check valve is only for a hydronic heating system and not for use in other applications. If you have questions please feel free to give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301
