Q:what is the inside depth measurement ?

    Answer This Question

A:  Tread depth varies depending on the space the staircase is in. If the staircase doesn't have much space to go from the first floor to the second floor the tread depth will be smaller. Our standard tread depth is 11.5 inches. The smallest allowable tread depth is typically 10 inches, check your local building codes to confirm.

Q:Can you cut these? I would have to cut the depth and width. Still cheaper than a custom tread. Any advice?

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes, Mine had to be cut down by about 6 inches in length. My neighbor who had a table saw cut them for me. I did not need to cut depth...I was closing in an open staircase and I also wanted more depth because my prior treads were too shallow. IF you cut the length down, consider reusing the end that was cut away - I use mine as hot pads and cutting surface in my kitchen - they wprk - quite well - I put mineral oil from the pharmacy on them to keep them nice - the Tread lip is nice on the counter edge to keep it from moving and the smaller size is good when the kitchen is occupied by multiple persons.

      A:  This is hard maple.

      by|May 1, 2020

A:  IT is a hard maple in my book but I am not an expert on wood. I have had the treads down for more than a year and they are holding up to the torture of pets, kids and men. One comment, I did have trouble getting them to take on stain (maple can be this way. I ended up using a gel stain the sealed with Urathane water based satin finished sealer that worked quite well and holding up nice.

A:  Yes they are meant to go right over your old stair treads.

          by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, this product is designed to go directly over old stairs.

            by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes it can but if your tread comes out to far you may have to trim existing stair nose.

              by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes that is what I did.

                by|May 5, 2023

A:  Yes, that is what I did. I had rough wood treads that were covered with carpet. The stairs were open. Closed the stairs when I put them down and left the original treads in place. One thing to consider - make sure you have a plan for ensuring the treads rise the same over the entire staircase as this is often the reason why people trip midway up the stairs....mine were fine and I was adding tile at the bottom of the steps so it was all good.

A:  Yes it can go over existing stairs provided your tread does not stick out too far from the riser below the tread. We installed ours over the existing treads and it worked easiily. There is a video that Stairtek put out that will show you what to do if there is a nose on your current tread you can watch.

A:  This can be glued to concrete stairs.

                    by|May 3, 2023

A:  Concrete can create moisture issues. If your are confident you are not likely to have moisture issues I say go for it. As a precaution you might consider a Red Guard application to create a moisture barrier first.
