A:  Hi da628, while we're not professional finishers, we do maintain that red oak is not the best specie for painting. With pronounced grain patterns and colors, red oak will show grains underneath most interior paints. There is a technique that we've seen called "wash" that has produced beautiful results on red oak, but that was done a professional. We suggest consulting the folks in the Paint Department for their recommendations. Otherwise, you might think about purchasing the Primed version of this newel (#1002219318), which is designed to be painted, and then purchase a separate red oak cap kit (#205431420), and stain the cap. If you have additional questions, we'll help the best we can. Thank you.

A:  I stained the cap first so any dripped stain will be covered by paint. Also, make sure to prime it good if you are painting. The wood will suck up paint so prime first.

A:  Hi SSK, these newels come with in installation block included, which requires a different method for securing the newel to the floor. In short, the installation block comes with the newel, inserted into the bottom hollow Cut the newel to the desired height. Slide the newel over the installation block, nail the newel to the block, and the install is complete. We have complete instructions included with every newel. A:  Thank you for your question Kevin. Our 4091 style box newel is hollow for the bottom half, but we do offer a solid core with this item. The core is about 12" tall. If you are needing to cut down the box newel, you can remove the solid core and then put it back into the bottom once your cuts are made . The core will offer you a solid hold once the newel is lagged down into the floor using our newel attach kits or our newel bolt kit.
