Q:We can't get rid of the odorous house ants we have and are trying to find something will kill those in particular. We get them every summer and usually pay an exterminating company to spray, but wanted to try saving some money this summer and do it ourselves. They're the small black ants that have a poison-like smell to them when crushed. My grandfather always called them "p*ss ants" when we were growing up, because they have an ammonia smell to them when killed (like cat urine almost). After hiring an exterminator, we found out they were called Odorous House Ants, and are very hard to get rid of. Even the exterminators had problems getting rid of them, so we switched to a different company that charged us $400 to do an extensive "fog" outside around the house to get rid of them, which worked great and we were ant free last year. However, they're back, and with all the rain we're having, it's running them inside the house. All my neighbors are having issues as well. I'm hoping this will work and save us at lease $300 this summer. I've got a big problem with slugs in my yard as well, so I'll be on the hunt next for something that will kill those too.

A:  Hi Stacey. Right, all the rain will definitely bring more bugs inside. This spray is specifically listed for odorous house ants, and can be sprayed indoors and outdoors. Any idea where they are entering? Concentrating treatment at entry points, inside and outside window and door frames and along ant trails indoors will go a long way toward eradicating them. You can treat as needed. Good luck!

        Answer This Question

A:  Spectracide Ant Shield Insect Killer Aerosol is ok to use on your wood floors. It's also ok to spray if you have pets; just remove them from the area while you treat and don't let them back in until the spray has dried completely.

A:  Hi dmcristi, Almost all insect killer sprays won't damage wood floors, unless you leave it on there without removing it for a long time. However, the best spray to use for insects and safe for pets is one that says so on the container. One we carry in some stores is linked below: http://www.homedepot.com/p/EcoSmart-14-oz-Ant-and-Roach-Killer-US/202279705 Joseph

A:  I do not know. I know that when we spray outside, we do not let the pets out. Never sprayed inside, use ant traps it is a lot safer for the pets and you( poison lingers in the air and even when spraying outside use a face mask.
