Q:Given that this costs less than Romex 10/3, can I use it in an interior application where I would usually use Romex? Are there any disadvantages to doing so?

Answer This Question
A: UF-B is much better insulated than NM-B (Romex), so it is approved for indoor use as well as outdoor and burial. Romex is only approved for interior. So you can substitute UF-B for NM-B (Romex), but not the other way around.

Q:Could I use this type of wire to power a submersible 230 Volt 1.5 HP pump (max draw of 12 Amps at pump start) in a 600 foot deep well approximately 100 feet from my house (700 foot run total)? I plan to install in 1-inch diameter conduit.

Answer This Question
A: 700' is a very long distance and you will have a voltage drop of 8.3% based upon a load of 12 Amps at 230 Volts. Industry recommendation is 3%. In order to keep the voltage drop below 3%, you would need to use 4 AWG conductors.
UF-B Cable is not the best choice for that application as the equipment grounding conductor (EGC) is not insulated underneath the jacket. Submersible pump cable is similar to UF-B Cable and has an insulated EGC.
Here are our submersible pump cable options:
