Q:How well does the Southland 43cc Earth Auger Powerhead with 8" bit handle rocky soil? I need to dig 3 foot deep holes through hard limestone & shale that lies about 6" under the topsoil. Will this auger do the job? If not, would it help to starting all the holes with a smaller diameter bit (2") and then come back and finish with the 8" bit?

A: I would recommend buying a better brand. This is ok for small gravel but does not have the power for large rocks or hardpan. It will likely stop digging or bog down or not dig at all.

A: it will jump around go slow you need 2 people

A: This auger is not designed to bore through hard limestone and rock. You would have to bore down as far as you can then use a breaker/digging bar to bust up the rock and clear it out of the way, then continue boring the hole with the auger.

A: Chas642, If you are planning to dig through 2 1/2' of stone, I know of NO auger that can accomplish that task! You would have to dig as far as possible and then use a breaker/digging bar and hope that the rock is in thinner layers. You will be using a good deal of energy using a 10-15 lb. bar! Good luck, maybe change your plans or design for your project!

Q:I live in Texas on the edge of the hill country. Drilling post holes will involve hitting rocks. Most rocks can be broken with a few good hits from a digging iron and others can be warn through hit it enough times with a post hole digger. Some times mostly rock but not hard like sand stone. Will this work for me?

Answer This Question
A: If they are soft rocks, this auger should be able to bust them up. They may slow you down a bit and wear out your bit faster. Those are replaceable by visiting http://www.southlandpowerequipment.com/. If you run into harder, more stubborn rocks, you will need to have digging bar handy to break and dislodge the rocks and get them out of your way.

A: were you able to get this to work? I'm in Hillsboro, TX!!
by|May 5, 2023
A: I used this to dig 48in fence post holes in my yard and found going through gravel sized rocks is not a problem, once you start hitting rocks that are the size of your palm for example is when it starts to have issues, sometimes it can dig em out if you work it up and down a bit other times you'll have to stop and dig them out by hand and then continue.

A: Rock bar move the rock and dig the hole deeper if need be with the auger

A: Small rocks and gravel will be fine. Medium to large rocks will stop the auger.

A: Perhaps at the engine, but certainly not at the auger. There is a reduction drive and clutch.
by|May 5, 2023
A: Look at the manual to verify. I am pretty sure the actual max bit speed is 250RPM. Much faster, you would spinning with it.

A: Thank you for inquiring about the Southland earth auger. The RPM of 9500 listed on the Home Depot web site is for the engine. There is a 30:1 gear reduction from the engine to the bit which would make the bit RPM approximately 317 RPM. We will update this info on the Home Depot site to show the bit RPM.

A: Check air filter. Check fuel tank for dirty pick-up filter. Check compression in cycliner if blue smoke is present in exhaust. Carburetor may need adjustment or throttle cable failure.
by|May 4, 2023
A: clean the carburetor. Stop using your own gas/oil mixture and start buying the premix in store. The pre-mix does not contain ethanol that destroys plastics and does not gum up like the self mixed stuff does.

Q:How close can i get to a wall when digging a hole.
by|Dec 26, 2016

Answer This Question
A: That depends on whether the wall has a footing projection and if the hole is required to be vertical. You really should investigate this "wall" further to determine feasibity of whatever you are trying to achieve regardless of how close you "might" get this to said wall. For the simple answer, you could theoretically be within 8" of an obstacle taller than the equipment in hand however, I wouldn't recommend it.

A: I dug out holes for buddy post for fence and was able to get 3/4 to 1 inch from fence board. (Handle Clearence) Easy digging down (28inches), hard to lift auger out of hole. Suggest two for lifting auger out.
Great tool! It was a challenge to lift out alone but got the job done. More room is needed to lift out easily
