A:  While Delta Moonlight crape myrtles can thrive in containers for a limited time, they generally prefer to be planted in the ground for long-term health and optimal growth. Planting in the ground provides better insulation for the roots against temperature extremes and allows the tree to establish a more extensive root system. If you choose to keep it in a planter, ensure the container is large enough to accommodate the growing tree, provide proper drainage, and use a well-balanced, nutrient-rich soil. Regular watering and fertilizing are crucial to support the plant's needs when grown in a container. However, transplanting it into the ground will likely result in a healthier and more robust Delta Moonlight crape myrtle in the long run.

          Answer This Question

A:  The Delta Moonlight white blooming Crapemyrtle is typically considered a deciduous shrub or small tree. Its growth habit allows it to be pruned into a more tree-like form with a single trunk or maintained as a multi-stemmed shrub. In optimal conditions, it can reach a height of 8 to 12 feet, resembling a small tree. The classification as a tree or shrub often depends on how it is cultivated and pruned by the gardener. Regular pruning can shape it into a tree-like structure, while leaving it unpruned may result in a more bushy appearance.

A:  Juan, You do not want to fertilize your Crape Myrtle in the middle of winter, wait until you start to see some growth in spring before you apply some fertilizer(I recommend a slow-release granular fertilizer). As far as watering just make sure your new plant does not dry out excessively by watering well at least once a week while your plant is dormant in winter. If you get rain, do not worry about watering your plant. When spring rolls around you need to make sure you water at least once a week or twice a week during dry periods at least for the first year while your new plant is getting established. Thank you for your question!

A:  For a White Delta Moonlight Crape Myrtle planted in January 2016, it's generally advisable to start fertilizing in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs or trees. Apply the fertilizer according to the package instructions, and be sure to water the plant thoroughly after fertilizing. In terms of watering, crape myrtles prefer well-drained soil and benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry out between watering to prevent waterlogged conditions. Given that your plant appears fragile, consider staking it for support if needed. Pruning can also help strengthen the structure and encourage a more robust form.
