A:  This question gets asked alot, and Merlin from Simpli Home either just looked at the included diagram, or went with a canned answer and did NOT actually look at the unit or discover a little hidden secret on this unit. The top is NOT 13.4" - due to a design error, they had to put a 1 inch cleat in the front and back of the top - meaning the top shelf is effectively 12.25", shorter than the second and third row of shelves. Check out the pic, if you look critically you can see it. Also, go read a couple reviews over on Amazon - they point it out. One reviewer bought to store his albums and unfortunately found out the hard way the top shelf is advertised incorrectly - albums are closer to 12.5" and the reviewer could not use the top shelf. So if you are planning to store LP's / Albums - consider the Acadian 9 cube instead, not this artisan.
