A:  not exactly because soft serve uses extra type machinery, but if u run it not the whole time it will be somewhat like soft serve. it meant to go until timer and then u scrape out batch into a bowl to stick in freezer to fully harden because otherwise it will be difficult to get out of container if u leave it in to fully harden.

A:  This does not make soft serve ice cream.

A:  it not even half as loud as a blender. it makes a little noise because of motor and compressor. but like a slow hum.

A:  I really am not aware of similar machines. This is heavier duty that most most "home" appliances but not on a commercial scale. I think SPT is known for ice makers but I know very little about the company.

A:  SPT stands for Sunpentown. Sunpentown are known for their portable ice makers. Sunpentown re-branded themselves as SPT, and their ice cream maker is fairly new in the market.

A:  I had never heard of SPT / Sunpentown either, but I bought a counter-top dishwasher made by them about 4 years ago. I use it every day, and it's amazing. It does its job extremely well, and it's been 100% reliable. I had pretty low expectations because it was less expensive than comparable small appliances, but I've been really happy. Now I'm shopping for ice cream makers, and this one is about $40-$50 less than the Whynter ICM-200LS (which looks like a good machine also, with slightly more capacity than this one). For me it's just a matter of needing more capacity, but I have total confidence in this brand.
