A:  We are here to help, Andy! Prior to recoating with Rust-Oleum Restore 4X Deck Coat, we recommend ensuring that the surface is clean, dry and in good condition. We recommend applying a coating of Rust-Oleum Restore Deck Start Primer. If there are any areas with bare wood, we recommend lightly sanding those areas first before priming and then applying a coat of the Restore 4X on those areas. Once the primer has dried, a coat of the Restore 4X can be applied to the whole surface. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Restore-1-gal-Deck-Start-Wood-Primer-301233/206869729 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  My experience, each year, is that I powerwash it for a cleaning but not to strip it down. The paint is still on the deck boards but I get all of the dirt off. I will do any maintenance that is required like nails, bad boards, filling holes and cracks but then the main thing is to put a coat or two of the adhesive product down over. If you do not do this step then it will peel and crack if it is not stripped down. If you apply the adhesive then you can put the 4x on top and it is brand new. I don’t always do the spindles, maybe like every other year, but I do the floor each year and never have had an issue with peeling or cracking. It’s a bit extra $$ and work but not nearly as bad as stripping the deck down. I actually just bought my 5 gallons of 4x and 2 gallons of adhesive and have to pick it up tomorrow.

      Answer This Question

A:  We do not recommend applying Rust-Oleum Restore 4X Deck Coat with a sprayer. For best results and to ensure proper adhesion, apply Restore 4X with a 3/8” or ½” nap roller.

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello! Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, Rust-Oleum does not recommend this product for use on smooth or floated concrete, fiberglass, tile, and metal surfaces. If it is applied to any of these surfaces, it will not adhere properly. The only type of concrete it will adhere to is brushed concrete. - Christine

A:  Hello Alan! Thank you for your question! The stain will have to be chemically removed before applying this product. Here is a stripper you can use: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-gal-Wood-Stain-and-Finish-Stripper-6401N/202263937 Have a great day! Christine

A:  It can't be directly applied unless it is totally powerwashed and cleaned. My recommendation would be to clean it with a wood cleaner and deck brush (no power washer needed) and then apply the Deck Primer first and then the 4x over top. It will come out great! Take the time.

          Answer This Question

A:  Clean with the recommended cleaner after sanding all loose and weathered wood and previous coatings as described in manufacturers' directions, don't cut corners, that's a recipe for failure.
