A: Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat Spray Paint can be applied directly to metal surfaces, and a primer is not recommended or required. If the surface is galvanized, this product will not properly adhere, and at this time we do not offer a high heat paint or primer suitable for that type of use.

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out, Kevin. While Rust-Oleum Automotive Spray Paint can withstand temperatures up to 2000° F, the exposure to direct heat from a dryer will cause the paint to crack and peel.

Q:Just wondering if you’re supposed to use a primer with this and if so, could you recommend the primer so that it would have the same protection as heat as the paint? What I’ve got going on is a double 55 gallon drum wood-burning stove that I need to paint

A: Happy to help, Sonny! Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat Spray Paint is suitable for use on bare metal surfaces. However, please keep in mind that this product needs to be baked on to fully cure. If unable to bake the surface, we recommend Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Paint instead.

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Tony! We would not recommend curing Rust-Oleum Automotive High Heat with a heat gun. For items on the vehicle, run the vehicle at idle for 10 minutes and then allow 20 minutes to cool. Then run vehicle at idle for 20 minutes and let cool for 20 minutes. Finally, run vehicle at normal operating conditions for 30 minutes, then allow vehicle to cool. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

A: My suggestion is to avoid use of a heat gun as you may exceed the maximum drying temperature recommended and damage the finish. That maximum bake temperature is 600 degrees F, easily exceeding with a heat gun. Use a hair dryer instead to prevent damage to the finish.
