The FastTrack Closet system will hold up to 100 lbs per bracket and 300 per upright when using the horizontal hang rail installed into studs and the uprights are spaced 24-36" apart. A:  I believe the shelf brackets are rated up to 200 lbs. I spread mine out every 24 inches and they definitely hold that much with 1/2" plywood shelves. Forty-eight inches might be a stretch if you're really loading heavy books on the shelves.
