Q:I?m adding an electrical outlet directly behind my tv so there are no wires showing that plug in to the outlet directly 4ft under the tv itself. I?m planning to do this from that existing outlet under the tv. It?s on a 15 amp circuit. What?s best to use?

          A:  14-2 Romex copper

          by|Feb 13, 2023

A:  If you are sure this is a 15 amp circuit then using 14/2 NM cable (romex) is what you need.  But, if the cord is long enough you can just cut a low voltage box beside the existing outlet and drop the plug down the wall. You can then use one of the plates from the data section that allows the cable to come out of the wall and look decent. This way you are not getting into the electrical wiring and it’s much easier and cheaper.

A:  14/2 Romex (black, white, green) , cut in box (remodel box) single gang plastic

A:  If the receptacle currently below the TV has 14 gauge wire going to it, use 14/2WG romex. If the existing receptacle has 12 gauge wire going to it, you MUST use 12/2WG romex. You also must "Arc-Fault Protect" the new receptacle. We do that professionally in the Electrical Trade by installing an Arc-Fault receptacle where the lower original receptacle was and connect the wires feeding the new receptacle behind the TV to the LOAD-side screw terminals on the AFCI receptacle. This will Arc-Fault-protect both receptacles.

A:  14/2 Romex. I would not recommend buying the wire at Home Depot. They are about double the price that you will find at an electrical supply place. I’ve learned the hard way and no longer shop at Home Depot for anything.

Q:I?m installing an outside wall light with a GFI outlet in it. Is this size wire all right to use for that? I?m going to separate the outlet from the light so the light doesn?t have to be on for the outlet to be able to use. I?m using the same switch

A:  14/3 romex is good for 15 amps. As long as you don't use a 20 amp breaker or larger with this wire, you should be good.
