A:  The width of the legs is 1 inch.

A:  It comes in a box requiring assembly. So, I suppose you could not fully assemble it. But I would think that it may not be very stable. For me, I did not use the lowermost cross bar per the instructions because it interfered with the water supply line coming from the wall behind the toilet. Instead, I used this piece as a way to attach the unit to the wall, so there would be no way for it to tip forward.

A:  Not it cannot be separated to make two units but you could purchase two units and cut down the stationary wood holding the shelves

A:  No, it is not recommended to be separated and be used as two standing shelves.

A:  I am not aware of any leg extension. I am wondering if you encountered the same problem we did. Our toilet supply valve came into the wall at a point that interfered with the bottom-most cross bar support on the back of the unit. My husband had to remove and reposition that cross bar to make it work for us.

A:  It is a very dark espresso, so almost black, but next to something truly black it would be off.

A:  It is definitely darker than dark brown--not quite black but almost.

A:  It needs assembly, and so I would think it can be painted. Just know that it has white plastic caps that go on over the screw holes and I don't think the caps would take to painting.

A:  The space between floor/bottom shelf is 32 inches high.

A:  Each shelf, including the top, is solid (not slats).

A:  Yes each shelf is useable including top. I maintain multiple towels on each shelf
